Hi All,
Let me start by asking you to Please excuse my ignorance. Maybe I should be posting this in a different area..



In short.. My grandfather passed away in September. Among his possessions and his camera gear I came across a lens that didn't go with any of his equipment.

The box seems to be the original (Although beat up) Yet the lens inside looks perfect.


In the circle around the lens it reads CANON LENS 50mm 1:0.95 No.23739
canon camera co.inc Lens made in japan


Not having a local camera shop (wolf/ritz camera are the on;y ones). I drove out today to Joliet. The guy there told me the lens was before his time and if I was interested he would give me $100 dollars for it. I couldn't fathom why a the guy would offer me anything for something he didn't know anything about. So I left.

Then I got the bright idea ... why not check ebay... Wow... No lens by itself but $1400 for a lens and a camera. More research and then I find this place. I read more than a few posts but it just brings more questions.


So without boring you anymore

1 Is this the "dream" lens?

2 Is ebay a good place to sell?

3 Not having any way to check the units operation how can I be sure that I am accurate in describing the unit as in great condition?

4 the No# on the lens a serial number or a model number

It's worth at least $1000 on eBay.

You could probably sell it here for about $1200.

Shine a flashlight through the lens, look carefully for scratches, haze, anything wrong with it. See if it focuses smoothly.

It's a somewhat rare lens that is desirable because it's a very high speed lens that can be adapted to M-mount cameras and used today. The Leica M8 has probably heightened demand in the last couple of years and hence the high prices.
 
Aye, the lens you found is quite a highly prized lens. Whatever you do do not sell it for less than what you could get for it on ebay or here. You're doing a disfavor to yourself and your late grandfather.

Cant really say much else that anyone else havnt said.

I know a member here by the name of Erik who also has a Canon .95 so he can probably shed more light upon the lens for you.

Oh and the # on the lens is most likely a serial number I would imagine.
 
Check it carefully, take some very clear close-up photos of it (if you don't know how, find someone who does, since photos are very important), describe it exactly as you did here with the grandfather story, and put it on eBay for $899 with a Buy it Now with immediate payment required for $1200. Show the box, any papers that came with it, show the condition of the glass.

You'll probably sell it within hours.
 
thank you for the advice. Do any of you know of any camera shops in the chicagoland area. I would be so afraid to sell something for that much and not have had someone look at to tell me that I was offering someone a fair deal.


How many pieces of glass are there in a lens 2 or 3?

You don't really need a camera store to inspect anything for you. You can do it yourself. Take good photos of it. Give a 7 day return period and rely on your own judgement.


PS: I'm not certain without looking it up, but there are many pieces of glass in the lens. Just inspect with a flashlight. Damage, cracks, haze and scratches will be obvious.

it does say tv on the outside of the ring

I live in Mokena Illinois 20 miles south west of Chicago.

I would rather it go to someone that needs it/appreciates it vs squeezing every dollar out.

any suggestions on cleaning off the dust? I look through the lens to look for imperfections and I only see specs of dust on the other sides.

I wouldn't use Windex but shouldn't you use something as to ensure you don't scratch it?
 
EVERYONE wants/appreciates it. Get as much money as you can.

You can use a little Windex, but don't clean it too much, leave if for the new owner to handle.
 
Central camera on Wabash might be a good place to get it inspected and even sold if you don't want the hassle.
 
I was going to head there Central camera if the internet didn't help.

There is no hood.

The lense has both metal caps and there are 4 filters from a company called tiffen that fit the lense. (Assorted 1/2 to +3?) Not canon.
I also just found a small box labled canon lense extender 2x ... Its a small piece that screws onto the back of the lense. printed on it ZOOM EXTENDER 2x For Canon Zoom Lens 25-100mm 1:1.8 is this part of this lens.
 
The TV lens is NOT RF coupled. It does cost more to have converted as a cam has to be added in order for the lens to work with the Leica M rangefinder.

I would try yto sell it privately - it is a high interest lens. Juat place an add in the classifieds.

Thank you all for your much appreciated advice.

I went Tuesday down to central camera (Downtown Chicago)

The gentleman behind the counter seemed to be a little flustered by the lens and told me he would have to ask someone else. He walked ten feet away and talked in hushed tones with two other gentlemen. I overheard the one saying that it was a very expensive lens at which point the salesman I was dealing with shushed him.

He then got on the phone and talked to someone for a few minutes. Five minutes later Don the store owner came down and looked at the lens. He commented on the different mount and how that if it had the other mount it would probably be worth $100 but with this mount is was worth $50. The Salesman interjected that it was in great shape..at witch point Don gave him a dirty look and told me he would give me $75 for the lens, filters and the zoom extender that I had brought with me.

I politely declined and told him that I would probably be best served dropping it on eBay. He advised me against it on the fear that I would be ripped off????

I want to thank you again for the honesty that I have found here. Please find attached some pics I took.


please advise on other ways to make the shots more descriptive

That's not the TV lens. What made you think it was?

It has the C-mount adapter attached, but it's the 35mm camera lens with the focussing cam.

the lens ring usually says TV, not the body - that looks like some sticker just to denote that it was being used as a tv adapted lens. i think you have the real deal.
