So, there I am, minding my own business, just popped into town to do some Christmas shopping, when I hear the siren call of this little beauty sitting in the window of London Camera Exchange.

Now, I used to have a DR Summicron years ago. It was my first Summicron, and I have regretted selling it for many a long year. When I saw this one, on a nice M2 I went in and asked. They were on at £499 the pair, and I asked if they would split. No, came the answer - it's difficult to shift bodies on their own, and they had priced to sell. But I don't need another M body, say I. In the end, we compromised. £450 the pair. As I was paying the manager disappeared into the back and came back first with an IROOA hood (pictured) then with an apparently unused brown leather Leitz neck-strap and threw them in. I popped a roll in immediately and had a play around. Here is one of the first results:

I honestly intended to come straight home and put the M2 on eBay... Really I did... I only wanted that Summicron...

But.

That clear and uncluttered viewfinder...

The buttery-smooth wind on...

The polite cough of the shutter...

Both lens and body date from 1960. I don't know, but I should imagine they were bought from new as a pair. They are both in remarkably good condition; no brassing, no dings, even the flash socket covers are in place.

Seems a shame to break them up after all these years...

So I have stuck a Luigi strap on it, and just spent the last two hours putting a whole bunch of other stuff on eBay

On the whole I think I've got a bargain. I've looked at DR, M2 and IROOA prices on eBay and it certainly looks that way.

Watch this space. My IIIc has a younger brother...

After taking a beautiful shot like that, I wouldn't dream of parting with it! Enjoy it and take many more of these fine photographs.

Now there is a nice combination! All you now need is a 35f2 and you should be set. The DR is still a formidable lens. I have one of the same vintage and that is more or less planted on a M2.
Have fun and shoot away - M2' are heavily addictive though so beware. The effort to change lenses tend to have you buying more bodies and drape on yourself!

I wouldn't part with it ... 🙂 Congrats to your new M2 / DR ! As Tom said, only one more 35/2 and your are done ... (maybe !) 😀

Bill: congratulations....i am so happy for you! even more so, as now i think you should try a ZM 35/2 on that M2 in the coming year to piggy-back on satan's tempting remark 🙂 a well composed trial shot btw. truly you have a wonderful set of 50s! good cheer to you...and happy christmas! thomas

Which LCE is that Bill, the one near me is next to crap, with loads of digital compacts lol

It's the one in Guildford, in Surrey. They often have some interesting stuff. At the moment there is a IIc factory converted to IIf, and a Hexar AF Stereo, and a Nikon Stereo, both in manufacturer's boxes. There are also Contax G things, and quite a lot of OM, as well as the usual Canon and Nikon SLR stuff.

I bought my IIIc from them this time last year, and always take a look when I walk past.

Bill

Hey Bill; I just had another thought about your M2. The versatility of its uncluttered finder allows you to use a 25 or 28 FL lens quite accurately if you use the whole VF. I found covering the ribbed bright-line window to give me a very good VF for the ZM 25.
Of course all this is to suggest that you seriously consider trying a ZM 25 on that M2; it is a FL you do not own and a very good "story-telling" lens. For some reason I find that hardcore 50mm users find the 25 more to their liking than a 21 or 28; you may find this is a great opportunity to get a fantastic wide lens that you use in more situations than you ever anticipated.

Just a thought...again, I am so happy for you regarding the DR and M2 acquisition.

Bill, I'm going straight for the throat: just an M2. If the deal doesn't come through, I'll chase others until I get one. Have to, as I've already bought two screw-to-M adapters.

There's also a legitimate reason. My Zorki 1C needs a younger cousin.
