SD Card format

Hey guys,

having read the advice given to me recently, I have done what I do best and dived in the deep end and got a black M8 with a 28mm Elmarit lens 🙂

It is exactly what I thought it would be like and really suits the way I want to take pictures [really like the manual set up and focusing]

So I am off to the UK on Thursday, and will hopefully have some good pics to show when I get back.

Unfortunately, the camera shop sold me a 4gb Sandisk extreme III SDHC card which appears not to work! Any suggestions on the best card to use?

You can't use SDHD (yet) on the M8. Your best bet is a few Sandisk Extreme III 2Gb SD's - and at least one extra battery.

Basically any card but a SDHC card... From daily use I would advise the Sandisk Ultra 2 GB, but even the old types work fine. The M8 does take 4 Gb cards, but unless you are in dire need to shoot three hundred images in such a hurry that you cannot spare the time to change cards, it is not needed nor advisable. If one uses a number of smaller cards the potential loss in case of card failure is correspondingly less. A spare battery is essential. If you forget to switch the camera off and the shutter stays half-depressed in the case, you end up with taking out a comatose camera that needs the kiss of life from a fresh battery.

I agree with Jaapv in that larger cards are not necessary and of course the SDHC isn't an option. I started out with a 1gb card and then opted for an additional 2gb Hoodman and a 2gb SanDisk II USB. I now wish I had opted for just the 1gb versions since I will never load hundreds of photos at any one time. It was simply a waste of money and very much overkill. BTW: I chose the Hoodman because of its high reliability (lifetime warranty) and the SanDisk II USB for traveling. It allows you to share your photos with most any computer by simply folding the card in half and inserting it into your friend’s or families computer and you’re done. No cables or readers required. In fact, if you opt for the 1gb version and you’re in a hurry, simply give the card away and hop on the airplane, train or horse, and head off into the sunset.

All good advice and yes 2gb cards are great I use them for another reason as well.... all my images are not on one card, if the card corrupts or the camera or a travel bag is stollen I still have my other 2 cards with images on them so it's not a total loss!

Yeah - great -fill up the card, get out the portable storage and copy, format the card and carry on shooting. Not very practical 😉 These things are not expensive any more. Just carry plenty. Copy to the storage when you have time and keep the full card as a backup. Just one thing can save you in this digital age, and it is backup, backup and backup. Only format the card after you have stored the files in at least two places. Don't underrate your own stupidity. I've "lost" plenty of files (read wiped them in a momentary aberration) that would have been irrecoverable without backup. And that is not even thinking about theft, loss, mechanical damage or breakdown.

A lady wedding photographer in my town shot a wedding on one large card. When she put the card in her reader, it would not work in her computer. Lost the whole wedding. Now she uses smaller cards and rotates them regularly.

I work on computers to make money for my photography.

I know two things now about flash memory...
1) never plug a card reader or your camera into a powered hub... you know... the kind that has an AC adaptor. USB ports power the flash memory with 5 volts coming through the port. The AC adaptors are sketchy on how correct that voltage is in some cases. I ruined one memory card and two thumb drives before learning that lesson.

ALSO... AND THIS IS BIG... before you remove a card reader, a flash drive, AND/OR your camera from a USB port, go to the icon in the system tray (Windows), that allows you to disengage the port (turns off the power to the port), B4 pulling the card-drive-camera. A spark in the port can damage your card-drive-camera.

I NEVER put my camera directly into my computer via USB and use the camera as a reader. If I know I can ruin a card-flash drive, wouldn't it be Knucking Futs to take that chance with my $$$$$ camera.

All the above are great comments .. I'd also like to add .. If you buy a SanDisk ... you'll get a free bit of recovery software .. brilliant .. have used it .. even if you delete .. re-format no problem this little gem will relocate the start and end points and retrieve your files.

Cheers for the advice, I think I will swap it for 2 x 2gb cards as they should not have sold it to me, considering it does not work! I have another card to keep me going until I go back🙂

On a completely separate issue, what are the best settings to have the m8 set up to for general photographgy?

Are there any 'best' settings???

COSTCO has 2 pack of San Disk Ultra II 2gb for $49US. They work great with the M8(the D Lux-3 and my Audiovox 6600 PDA/Cell), so I bought 3 more packs, told my kids I needed more as stocking stuffers, and should end uo after X-mas with about 3 more twin packs. Get 'em while you can.
With prices this cheap, I don't think I will need to carry my Epson P-2000 while traveling for a week or less anymore.
