A few days ago, I received an email from someone I had no contact with in over 40 years. It was a German guy from Turkish background who went to the same class as I did when I lived in Germany. I was really exited to be taken back 40 years to memory lane. I saw his photo in his email, and thoughts of middle school experiences came back to my mind.
He is now married with three kids, and he works as a lawyer in Berlin. He was worried for my safety [as I am from Iraq].
Have you encountered similar experiences these days? The availability of computer search engines allow you to find almost anyone in the world.
In my case, I looked up my middle school, and sure enough, there was a search engine to look up old school friends by year of graduation.
Anyways, this was my most exiting old pal event this year.

Well-known
I was just thinking of a similar event the other evening. I was having dinner with my dad and asked if he remembered so-and-so, who was a sometime mate in high school, 35 years ago.
This guy dropped me an email earlier this year. I had known that after school he had gone to Libya to work for an oil company and nobody ever heard from him after. Turns out he escaped the unrest in Libya, moved to Central America, married a Salvadoran woman, had three kids. They now live in the KSA where he works for ARAMCO. He and his buddies fly radio-controlled planes in their spare time. His wife is a hobbyist winemaker working with grapes they have flown in from around the Med. They live in a "western" complex so as not to offend the sensibilities of their "hosts". I wonder if they call him "Number 6" and if a big white ball chases him down if he leaves the compound.
He picked my email address out of several hundred in the header of a note sent out by a couple of women - girls, when I knew them - who had decided to start an alumni club for this high school which no longer exists.
This man and I were somewhat close in high school, but now all we have in common is that we have travelled around the world, married interesting women, had some kids, and lived another 35 years. I guess that counts for something.

John,
You have raised an important point and that is the fact that not being in touch with an old pal for so many years makes you total strangers in the end.
Still, there is alwasy hope that a new friendship can be created now. It is not easy to find a true friend these days, so building on what already existed many years ago may have some chance for a nice friendship.

I belong to a site called Military.com and being in the Navy many years ago I belong to USS LaSalle which has many members. There is also a buddy locator to help locate old shipmates. This comming year the LaSalle is having a reunion in Ct. I hope to attend. I also have a buddy susposedly now living in Fla. (probably Pensacola)I would like to see or talk with.
