May we all have to face this question in lives. Now that would be a really cool thing.

May be just me but it seems that the D3 makes most other cameras seem like Model Ts.
 
I would choose the M8 no doubt.
The D3 is heavy. It's huge.
I pack the M8 in my bag to work each day.
You cannot do the same with D3.

Also, I am not a reporter, I don't need 9 fps.
Rather, photography is my hobby,
the M8 is way more enjoyable to use,
giving my access to over 50 years of lenses.

The M8 will retain its value much better.
The D3 is in dangerous waters.
Canon will introduce a cheaper full frame body to replace the 5D.
So be ready to a cash rebate on the D3 in about a year's time.

Whereas, the M9 will also be full frame,
I am sure that's what LEica is going to do.
 
If I ever go digital it will be with a SLR and it will have "Nikon" branded on it...but by the time I get around to buying the D3 it will be off Ebay at a BIN price of $175...
 
If you can only have one camera and you must choose between the M8 and D3, you have to go with the D3. This assumes that you shoot under a wide variety of conditions. What this camera can do in low light sports photography at 6400 iso is just astounding.
 
I almost was going to burn all of my money to buy a D3. I got over it, but if I had piles of cash, it'd be the D3 all the way. Not only am I Nikon shooter accustomed to an SLR's flexibility to do macro one moment and super telephoto the next, Leica's poor jpeg image processor on the M8 offends me deeply as a user of technology.
 
I am more waiting for a Nikon brand digital rangefinder, comparing a DSLR with a rangefinder strikes me as being rather strange.
 
For me , with an Autistic glitch , the M 8 , with all it's faults is a real camera which I can understand .. I do not need the ultimate in quality and am still awed that I was gifted with an inheritance to indulge .
I have no intention of trying to keep up with the dee'sorientating escallation of pixelated perfection , just as an old Minolta , Kiev 4am , Leica II satisfy me in respect of film.
But my requirements are unique to me , and I would not dare to presume to question another's .

However if I were to have to make a living out of photography , then then the Nikon , and it's successor , and successor , and ... would be the sensible choice .

errrr .. do I sense a little deefensiveness on the part or the rangefinder enthusiasts here ? The ultimate in rangefinder perfection is most unlikely to come about - the M 8 may be the proverbial dead end - enjoy while you can !

I have been a Leica devotee for years because it suited my preferred style - which is available light photography. Since the introduction of the D3 we have a new king of available light.
My M4 and Noctilux are no match for My D3 and 85/1.4
The D3 is about 4 stops faster even with a 1 stop handicapped lens mounted.
ISO 25600 shots converted to B&W look very filmlike and similar to 1600 speed film.
Furthermore, this could be pushed to ISO 50K or 100K easier than film could be pushed to 3200 or 6400 due to greater detail in the underexposed areas.
This might change with the M9, as Leica, I'm sure, is looking to incorporate the attributes of the D3 (full frame & large photosites) into it's next flagship. Live view would be a nice touch, and very useful also.
 
Just handled a D3 at MacWorld. Shutter pretty quiet. High ISO pretty cool. Size-wise, not for me. I'll likely buy a small-size body version though when it comes out.

Speaking of electronic gadgets, the MacBook Air is pretty neat if you don't need the speed and storage. My wife put a freeze on our savings account this week.....
