sitemistic, that is a very familiar dialogue.
If someone cannot bear with criticism, should not show stuff in public.
If you have a small pickle, don't go flashing in the park coz girls will only laugh.
Sorry.
However, another version is when the "old timer" says " Take up another hobby". Or "Hope you didn't quit your day job." Many "old timers" htink this is a valid and informative, and not rude "criticism".

Easy to say, but at one time Sitemistic's dialogue is exactly what honest criticism engenered here at RFF. There was a photo posted by a newbie about a year ago. It was aweful. He asked for a critique. I didn't tell him it was aweful, I just pointed out a few of the obvious problems it had. I got kicked in the head for it. That was about the last time I posted an opioion about anyone's photography here.

as i said, T, familiar dialogue.
I'm an old timer. I've used the Internet since 1980.
I think it us rude bevavior, someone getting his Jollies out of putting down others.
On a humorous note, My Dad was a school psychologist at Auburn University in 1970. He had an art student come in with a crushed ego. He had exposed himself to a co-ed, she looked at him and announced "I've seen better". The student's semester project was exposing himself to co-eds, and painting the expression on their faces.

Yes I do understand that and then it is the balance between criticism and advice. A very hard thing to do - I teach so I really do understand.
What i meant more was the genuine help over development or scanning or photoshop problems as opposed to some of the "help" given in the which is better threads
Often there, it disintegrates into my wallet is bigger than your wallet so this or that bit of kit must be better, playground squabbles
maybe a better way would be to ask people show me what you have achieved and how you use a particular bit of kit and then I can decide if it fits with my way of photography.

sitemistic said:..........But see, here's the problem. How do you help someone who has posted a badly exposed, poorly framed, out of focus photo and asked for help, without getting a "screw you" in response?.........
I will give my opinion about it.
First of all you do a round evaluation, understanding beforehand that such a guy cannot become a sitemistic by a single leap. Therefore you will not throw on him at once all the mistakes you find in the pic.
At this stage you are studying from which angle you will approach the guy.
Upon your round evaluation of the picture, you will try to identify the relatively good intentioned points of the newbie. Here you will start talking, praizing the awarenes of the guy and then explain him how he may have come to a stronger effect by doing so and so.
At this stage, you may have said only a 10 percent of the mistakes. Good enaugh for a row. Here you stop.
Why do you stop here ? Because you don't make a mechanic by throwing on him the full box of gear. You go step by step. Enhancing understanding goes hand by hand with building self confidence.
If you have enabled the guy to understand his next step, you have done the job that was required at that moment.
Cheers,
Ruben

Well, I don't say it after every remark; I try not to waffle (I know many disagree); and as for knowing what I am talking about, I remember that wonderful observation, "I wish I were as sure about anything as he is about everything."Pitxu said:Roger,
Instead of having to say "I could be wrong" after every remark, would it not be simpler to desist from waffling on when you don't "know" what you're talking about?
Besides, quite often, I'm right. Facts and opinions are not the same thing; you can disagree with the latter, but if I say I'm reasonably confident about the former, you may have more of a job proving me wrong.
Cheers,
R.

I'm sorry, Ruben, although I hold you in good esteem, I must tell you this (in the most honestly, friendly way):ruben said:First of all you do a round evaluation, understanding beforehand that such a guy cannot become a sitemistic by a single leap. At this stage you have not said a single word to him.
Huh? I don't think "you've said a single word" to him so far. In "The Internets" which Uncurious George spoke about, clarity of language is of utmost importance. People still think that since it's "the internet", no rules of grammar or spelling apply, but since we don't see gestures, voice intonations, nor anything else that makes good human contact good, clarity of language is important.
I understand there is a language barrier. I'm trying to make you even more aware of it: I'm sure you're aware of it, but I don't think you realize that literally-translated idioms and slang does not work across languages; unless, of course, you're Data from Star Trek TNG.
Just a (very honest, caring) reminder.

sitemistic said:Ruben, I'm not sure your approach would actually make much difference. Many people don't want help, they want to be validated.
One of my other interests is in writing Poetry. The best advice I received on the direction I was going with my poetry years ago was from a very fine poet who I had asked to read my stuff and offer critique. His advice, "Burn it and stir the ashes."
Short, succinct, and honest. The stuff was crap.
If the case was that you was entretaining the idea of making a living out of Poetry, your fine poet may have done you a great service.
If the case was that you was looking for another venue of expression and creativity for your own joy - I wouldn't casthrate you, but done exactly what I recommended before.
Sometimes we get slapped by life. We have to find the strength of not slapping others as a veiled way of vendetta. I think your fine poet have been slapped quite hard to give you such a brutal answer.
Furthermore, once upon a time I was in your shoes, but showing my rather poor pics to a great photographer and a great human being as well. He gave a quick look to my pics and said to me "I need to see more".
On that opportunity I didn't have more available. Nevertheless, since he felt a great appreciation to me, he started to enligthen me about the biggest secrets of Photography. The observation, the need to gain the confidence of your subject, etc. All these with lots of examples.
I will never forget that day in my life. I felt as if I was taken by an airplain to the Olympus zenith and from there seen the world of Photography.
Afterwards in another opportunity in another country I showed other pics to a photo editor, who told me with the greatest disdain: "Bah these are postcards".
Fortunately I was vacinated beforehand by the former one, and after a few bad moments I understood I have in front of me a miserable mind, rather than a fine poet.
You see, I don't care much weather I am King Kong or not. Photography for me is the venue where I pour my creativity and this is what counts.
I have learned, I have improved, and I will continue so. I have sold a lot of pictures too, and I don't think most of them were the ones I considered the best, but those that filled the needs of the Editors at that moment.
It is not about being King Kong. It is about filling our soul.
Cheers,
Ruben

Perhaps not the most constructive way of criticism, but as long as that is what you wanted to hear I guess you could say that it "worked". Did you give it up?
