hello everyone. I am new to this forum having just picked up an Olympus 35SP from a thrift shop (you'd cry if I tell you how much I got it for...)

I have yet to use it with the elec. meter ( battery is on order ) but am getting to grips with it in full manual. It is a wonderful piece of engineering, and I can't wait to get my first rolls developed. I hope I don't have too many questions for you with this new camera...

I see most people on here are really happy with their 35SP's and it is nice to see some lovely scanned images from them.

I expect we would cry!
One went on eBay for £117 + P&P this evening - reckoned to be 'minty' and in full working order although no mention was made of the spot meter! I don't know what 'minty' means either.

The SP is reckoned to be a great piece of kit with a super Oly lens - I am waiting to see because I am expecting an SP to turn up in the post - wrongly described as an Olympus SG(!) and I asked the seller for a 'buy it now' price, and we struck a deal. Must have been more than you paid for yours though.
Average price in GB seems to be just over £50.

There are some great guys around with lots of information and the good humour to deliver it to us all.
 
Welcome, Andrew. You are bound to love your SP, assuming it's in good condition. Even if it needs a little attention, it is well worth it. Will (shadowfox) and I are the local 35SP head pusher/pimps, and there are others who love it as well. (Rich lead the cheering squad for awhile, but he does not chime in too much these days.)

One thing ... if you tell us you have a black paint model you will have to leave the forum as I'll be too devastated to endure your presence. 😛

I do not know what 'minty' is either....
Hope it's not the same as a Polo mint (with a hole in the middle!)

The 35SP I got is the silver type (not all black) and in very good condition, and has been well looked after, including the original Olympus case. I cannot test the electrics until I get the battery. I feel sad that I paid so little for it: cost about £1.60 ($3.15) but that was the price I was quoted.

I have no idea who previously owned it, but there was a colour roll of 36 Exp film in it, with about 20 already taken, so I will try and get that developed (always a mystery!)

I hope to post some pics as soon as I can, but without a scanner, it is pretty difficult.... ho hum...

Earl, watch out for John (agi), he just got a 35 UC. I'm expecting his usual excellent street photo but rendered by the awesome G.Zuiko 😀
 
I'm shedding a tear about the price!
I thought I had done reasonably well but that's a ridiculous price.
Just envious - well done to spot it in the store!

Jesse, there are more than one ways to get a 35 SP for free or even paying "negative" for it 😉

£1.60!?!?! I am green now. I paid a heck of a lot more than that, but it was from a fellow RFF member and so has a story, and was incredibly well looked after.

I love shooting with it, have had 4 rolls through it, and apart from a little quirk everything has been smooth. The shot quality is incredible. I just need a better neg scanner now!

Uh... no. Appears I am a coward when it comes to separating. 🙄

I processed some 4x5 last weekend, but have yet to scan it. We'll see when that happens. 😉
 
I've now joined the 35SP Club - my SP arrive a day back.
It isn't bad really - a bit of a ding on the end but not really noticeable.
And it had a film in it, so I discovered when I opened the back to check on the seals. Fogged now!!
The seals needed redoing and I've spent a couple of hours digging out all the old bits. I can't understand how anyone can get out all these bits in half an hour.

I'm a bit surprised how this camera seems to be so much more substantial than the 35RC and 35RD.

I paid $125 for my Olympus 35 UC and thought it was a good deal for this hard to find gem. I just ran a roll thru it and haven't developed it yet but I'm a happy camper. The meter seems to be working as I used a wein cell battery.

Question...do I need to put it in a case (which I don't have) or remove the battery so that the battery doesn't drain?
 
John, can't wait to see your SF pics with your UC.

I always take the battery out when I put my 35 SP on the shelf.
 
If you are using an original mercury battery, just put it in the case. If you are using a zinc air battery, it doesn't matter if you take the battery out as zinc air batteries lose power just being open to the air. You could cover the holes in the battery with tape to perhaps prolong its life.
 
buy a criscam adapter, mine lasted for almost two years using the silver oxide with adapter.... well worth it

I managed to get some Zinc Air batteries. I was not aware that they start to drain as soon as they are exposed to air. Shame...

Does anyone know how long they are likely to last after being 'released'? I think I read somewhere that if I place the camera in something airtight when I am not using it, then they will last longer. Anyone know about this?

The good news is that the meter in my SP35 works fine. I got a roll of Kodak BW400CN in it at the moment, but I still don't have a scanner once I do get them developed.

I may try the 'cheap and dirty' trick of placing the negs over a lightbox and making some digital copies with my DSLR 🙂

please can you tell me more about this Criscam Adaptor, or send some links on what it is, and where to get it etc? Sounds a good solution.
