My GSN that I acquired courtesy of eBay arrived today. I have checked that I have a "thunk" :D but need to get a battery rigged up to checked the electronics.

However, I noticed a strong smell of cigarette smoke on the camera and the viewfinder is pretty foggy IMO  . So I plan to try to clean the viewfinder once I've checked the electronics out.

What I'm wondering is whether there is anything else I should be checking in light of its smokiness? What is the easiest way to check the cleanliness of the lens(through the film chamber or though the front of the lens)?

you should check the yashica guy

Also, my viewfinder is quite dark too, I can't use it to take pictures at night.

I opened it up in hopes of cleaning it out.
But make sure you don't touch the diagonal pieces of glass with ANYTHING!! Theres an extreamly thin coat of silver used in the reflections for focusing. I didn't heed the warning from the yashica guy about it and decided to gently touch it with a Q-tip. Big mistake. The image used for focusting is much fainter, and the view finder is still dark.

Now I just need to change the P.O.D. but my damn screw drivers are worn down.

BTW, do you mean the view finder is dark or foggy/not-so-sharp?

The viewfinder is both dark but also seems foggy (actually it also seems to have a blue tint?). It would be usable in daylight but not in low light/evening/night. I'll experiment with it some more before deciding whether to open it up.

I just got my second GSN today. It's in A- shape better than my first one! The only thing is the viewfinder is a bit darker. I hope it doesn't effect my lowlight shots. I did open it to clean it and is better, but still a little dark compared to my other one. The serial number is lower than my first GSN. Maybe it was a problem with the first batch? Also the lettering on top is thinner and not as bold lettering than on my first GSN.

No one has this problem? Is there a remedy to make it brighter? I cleaned it and it looks better, but still a little dark.

I find the Yashes have some of the best viewfinders around for brightness and usability. I never thought of it as dark. Maybe you didn't get it as clean as you thought?
