New firmware killing a few cameras

Not to be the one to yell the sky is falling, but according to some posts on the LUF, a few folks have had their cameras die when uploading the new firmware.

Mine uploaded just fine, and the new awb seems to be spot on. Just a heads up to read the directions before updating, and make sure you have a fully charged battery.

Still very much an M8 newbie, but loving the hell out of my new camera.

From what I had read, it had something to do with downloading the firmware through certain web browsers, or putting the upgrade on a SD that was not formatted before. Once it was downloaded through a different browser, or on a freshly formatted card, and then installed, all was fine.

No problems here.

1. Make sure card is re-formatted.
2. Make sure your battery is full, or close to it.
3. Wait 3 seconds before confirming that you want to update the firmware.

Strangely, no problems here either, but the neighbour's dog did start to bark as I pressed to confirm the update :eek:
 
I do not own an M8, but it is interesting to note the thread title. Specifically designed to increase hysteria over a very simple process. The flashing of firmware on many electronic products is completely routine and completely safe. If the user decides to follow the instructions from back to front, or not at all, then one might think that it is not the fault of the camera and it's designers ?

Sorry you took it that way. The point and title of my thread was to make sure you RTFM before proceeding, and that more than a few actual M8 owners had in fact locked up their cameras trying to install the firmware. As I stated in my post, mine worked great.

No drama, no pot stirring. No hysteria. I'm thrilled with my M8. I'm thrilled with the new firmware.

Hi All,

Before I make a new thread...I'd thought I'd ask those that have loaded the new firmware on their M8 as I just did. The update went fine but I noticed something that might or might not have been there before. When turning on the camera I wait as usual till the red light (on back of the camera goes out) and then press the "play" button to bring up the image thats already on the card. If memory serve me correctly I could press the play button just as soon as the red light went out and the image would pop up on the LCD. Now I've noticed I have to wait at least 2 seconds or even longer after the red light goes out before I can press the play button and have an image show up. If I press the play button even approx 1.5 to 2 seconds after the red light goes out (rather than wait more than 2 to 2.5 seconds, nothing will show up. I don't ever recall it taking that long. Is that what everyone sees who has updated their firmware? If so, soes anyone remember it taking a shorter time before this last firmware update? Thanks!

I certainly know what a PEBCAK error is but unfortunately it's use to describe this situation or it's description is incorrect. My simple observation is reflective of an actual observation and since firmware updates do indeed sometimes bring on subtle untold changes...I'm just trying to confirm if anyone else has observes the same on their "post firmware updated M8". Thanks!

I appreciate your response. I don't really need to know the difference before vs. after the firware update...just what your M8 is doing now after you installed the latest firmware update. In other words what is the approx. time once the red light "goes out" after turning on the camera, can you press the "play" button once and the image shows up? If you do this after approx. 1 second after the red light goes out Too soon) if your M8 is like mine, the image already residing on a SD card WILL NOT show up BUT if you wait a considerable time (2 to 2.5 seconds) AFTER the red light goes out, the image WILL show up on the LCD screen. If so, that means the total time from "turn on" till one can review an image is approx. 4 seconds. (Guess longer than I remember).

Hallo John,

My apologies for sounding rather impatient in my response. We have had similar situations in hardware which I used to support. The printed instructions say something like 'wait 30 seconds until an update light stops flashing' - then the support calls come in from users who make it a matter of pride NEVER to read instructions and guidelines . . . .

No worries Martin, and thank you for replying. :) I tend to lurk way more than I post. I really enjoy Leica cameras, esp my new M8, even with their quirks. When I saw the news about folks killing their rigs, I felt it necessary to report it, along with my positive experience. If my post caused 1 person to read the f***ing manual first before updating, then it was worth the 5 minutes to type it.

I turn to these boards for info regarding my gear. It's nice to read others experiences both positive and negative. I think we should post more positive experiences too, since the negative stuff tends to get the most press. :)

BTW, I've had 100% positive results with my M8. Never before have I taken such wonderful digital images. It puts my old D100 to shame in the imaging dept.

I'm afraid I'm the one who started the thread on the Leica forum. My M8 needs to go back to Leica as it is dead as a door nail after "upgrading" the firmware. It is a real problem for real people. I followed the instructions to the letter as best I can recall. After installing the firmware, the screen instructed to turn the camera "off" then back "on". When I did this the red light came on and stays on, even when the camera is shut off, and it is dead, nada.....:confused:
