Leica LTM Leica Lens Hood

When you don't know..ask. Can someone tell me what lens hood fits the 50/2 Summitar? I have the barndoor but would like a round one, IROOA perhaps? Thanks, Dave

The ITDOO fits nicely; I should imagine the IROOA will as well; there's been a fairly recent thread or mention of this, but I give up with the RFF "search" function. Attached quick & dirty shot of IIIc & out-of-focus Summitar with ITDOO

The SOOPD ("barn door") is easily the best hood for the Summitar. A round hood will leave the top and bottom portions of the lens exposed to extraneous light.

I just picked- up a Leitz barndoor hood in a box-lot from e-bay; the hood is marked "Summitar", but it appears to be identical to my Leitz "Summicron" barndoor...?

I don't know if that means that a "Summicron" barndoor will fit a Summitar lens...

I have a Heavystar E-39 Uv filter on the front of my Summicron, so neither hood "grabs" the milled recess on the lens' front mount; but there's enough tension in the hood's spring-clips to grab the filter, and it stays-put fairly well.

I think I have successfully used the Leitz "A-36 clamp-on to E-39" filter adapter ring to mount the Summicron barndoor on a Summar...

There were three versions of the SOOPD. The earliest (which I used with my Summitar) had a clamping screw; of the next two, one had clips to fit a square groove on the lens, the other fit lenses with a rounded groove. The SOOFM I now have and use on a collapsible Summicron, is marked "Summitar u.(nd) Summicron". I do not know the filter size for a coll. Cron, but the O.D. is 42 mm.

I found an old Tiffen("made in U.S.A.") screw-in hood that works great. It also comes apart to take series filters (6 I think), and doubles as a hood for the Summaron 35/3.5 and Nikkor 35/2.5 when combined with a SOOTF adapter. It's made of silver aluminium.

I just got a IIIf with a 5cm collapsible Summicron - and I'd like to know which lens shade/hood to use - and where to get it?

And if the answer is that SOOFM thing - isn't that a very expensive solution? I see one that's listed for $119 where i could make a 'best offer' but it's still a lot of money for a lens hood - isn't it?

Also - what is the filter diameter of a 5cm summicron? It's serial 1094483 if that matters.


I also got a brand new CV 25/4 lens from Cameraquest but haven't purchased the lens shade... I wonder if it's worth getting the new rectangular one he's selling? You'd think these things would come with lens shades!

The filter mount of the LTM collapsible Summicron is 39 mm, referred to by Leitz as "E-39". B&H, Hoya, and probably some other filter mfrs. still offer brand new filters in this size.

There is an e-bay vendor by the name of "Heavystar" who has all sorts of economically-priced filters, hoods, etc , for many cameras, including Leica Thread-mount. I got an E-39 UV / Skylight filter from him for about $14 , including S&H.

As for the pricing on Leitz SOOFM barndoor hoods, if you want one right now, you're probably going to part with $50 to $100, easily. If you're patient and scan e-bay, you might get lucky: I got my first barndoor ("Summicron") for $9.95 on e-bay; the second one was part of a lot that cost $18 I was (I bought the lot for an another item; finding the "Summitar" barndoor was a pleasant surprise).

Ritz collectible cameras usually has a variety of hoods, in varying conditions; probably worth a look their on-line catalog.

If you're careful to keep your back to the sun, a hood is not mandatory.

Frank, the sky puts a great deal of light on the front element of a lens. So do light coloured buildings and walls and so on.

A couple of years back, I was lucky to get a SOOPD (Summitar) in good shape for around $20. Last month I was impatient and got a SOOFM (Summitar u. Summicron) from KEH for $62. Needed flat black paint on the insides of the "wings", mechanically perfect.
