This is mostly a question of weight! I am going out of my mind trying to imagine just how heavy is "heavy" and "lightweight" lightweight. I read a lot of reviews on these lenses and I'm trying to decide which one I'd like to settle on. When I get one it'll be online and without the opportunity to hold it in my hands and assess it with my eyes, so I`m looking for some numerical assistance! I'm interested also in their dimensions.

I'm reaching out to all who have any of these lenses and could tell me their width/length and their weight please. !!

I hear the TE 90/2.8 is a great travel lens, because it's light, but that's relative to other lenses its focal length. And I think I am more concerned with available light shooting, I don't want to miss that moment because my aperture couldn't open wide enough. So I suppose I am leaning more to the Canon 85/1.8 or the Canon 100/2. Have heard great things about both. Worried about the weight of the 85/1.8 though.

For now I can handle heaviness as I am not the avid traveler, but that said am looking for what would be the most compact given it's aperture.

So weights and dimensions if possible lovely ladies and gents, my eyes burn from forlorn searching!

The most compact at f2.5 - f2.8 are the CV Heliar 75/2.5 and Tele Elmarit 90/2.8, both about the same size.

The most compact at f2 are the Jupiter 9 and Nikkor 85/2, the black Nikkor is preferrable due to weight and higher resolution. Size without hood is about the same for both.

Not too big, and a stellar performer is the 90/2 v3 (last pre-asph Summicron).

There are also the new 75 and 90 Summarits that are small and that I haven't tried yet. The 90/2.5 seems attractive since it has half stop more than the tele elmarit and still small.

My most compact fast tele outfit is my OM1 with 85/2 Zuiko though. 🙄

Nothing against the two Canon lenses that you mention though - they are stellar performers.

Best,

Roland.

Can't speak for the Leica lens, but the black & chrome & all-black versions of the 100/3.5 Canon are much, much smaller & lighter than either the 85/1.8 or 100/2. I'm talking pocket size & weight for the 100/3.5, whereas the 85/1.8 & 100/2 are your typical big fast short teles. For dimensions, etc., just go to the Canon museum:

The Canon 85mm f/1.8 is a heavy, heavy, lens. But I do love it.

If you want a nice lightweight lens in LTM and that focal length, the 90mm f/2.8 A. Schacht Travenar is quite light, but still well-made.

But hey, what about the Leica 90/2.9 Tele-Elmarit? How much does that weigh (approximately)?

I've pretty much ruled it out (for now, you never know how things will turn out) but I still need to sate my curiosity.

Thanks ferider, I was just looking at the two versions in more detail at the l-camera-forum.com before coming to check in here. Because I'm really attracted to the wide aperture on the Canon 85/1.8. And I would be looking at a Leica 90/2.8 Tele-Elmarit (fat), because as nice as those thin ones are, I just haven't the pocket deep enough (for now at least.)

In truth, I'm in very preliminary stages. I won't have anything in this focal range for some time.

I was just thinking, I started considering getting both the 85/1.8 & the 100/3.5, one for low light and the other for street and travel. I read they are optically similar as the aperture winds down, so I begin to wonder if it is not such a good idea. I still think it has it's uses, however, then I would have a 35mm gap in between my lenses. I'd go from 50mm to 85mm.

And I have an M4-P, so it might make more sense to follow the 75mm-90mm-135mm format it's got, that is, If I could find a 75/2 (or howvering around that aperture), but not for the prices of what I saw Leica 75's at on eBay just now.

Do you know what I mean? If I got a TE 90/2.8, then a Canon 85/1.8 is completely out of the question.

And all that flaring from the TE is a bit of a turn off. Are the hoods for it hard to find?

I've always used the std rubber hood with mine. Flare hasn't really been a problem. The last 1/2dozen or so I've seen for sale have included the hood, shouldn't be too hard to find.

I've had both the TE 90 and the canon 85/1.8. The TE was an easier lens for me to work with, lighter weight, easier to grip the aperture ring. Mine came with the metal hood and I've since seen both the metal and rubber hoods for sale on their own.

So the metal hood is the #12575?
Oh great, good to know someone else feels what way the 85/90 85/100 combo. That's totally where mind is headed. Two different uses you know? Of course you do. 😛

I'll just see what plays out. the Canon 100/3.5 at 220g is quite interesting to me.

Dannynono, do you have anything longer than 90? So you sold the 90 and kept the 85? What made you do that?

the rubber hood for the TE is 11250 (sometimes seen as 11251, which is the hood's mounting ring, i think).

sorry for the late reply.

I have the 90 T-E thin and it is pretty small, Only a bit bigger than the CV 75/2.5 Heliar I had. Mine came with the rubber hood and cap that fits into the rubber hood when it is collapsed. I also have a vented hood for my 50/2 Cron that will fit as well. Both work well to stop flare and I have had no problem with flare at all. I paid $425 from a RFF member for mine, (almost new condition) to give you and idea of price.
