to all the rf people :name your top 5 photgraphers

Martin Parr
Alec Soth
Andreas Gursky
Rineke Dijkstra
Ed van der Elsken and many many more... actually

Can we make this a Top 20?

At this moment (in no particular order)

Diane Arbus
Jeff Wall
Garry Winogrand
Elliott Erwitt
Robert Capa

Mine change very regularly but...

Elliot Erwitt is always at or near the top of my list. Anyone with that sense of fun and charm in their photographs will always win me over...also his ability to completely split his 'day job' from his 'hobby' images despite the hobby providing, in his hopes and words, a longer lasting body of work.

Trent Park is someone I've recently come to like but there's just so many!!

...oh, and that French chap who liked to paint - he was pretty good too.

Jon - I'm genuinely shocked and blushing but very pleased that you like some of my photos, thank you.

Araki, Gibson, HCB, Jonvelle, Newton. In alphabetical order.

I find it interesting to read other people's faves. I have to ask you, thougg, why Jonvelle? As a teenager I tried to like his work but I always found it too simple and easily copied. Of course, I am curious and I respect your choices as Jonvelle was renowned.

Only one mention of Arbus in 47 posts. Do you like her because she was a rebel, oddball or photographer.

I'll go with Weston but really have no preference.

Hi Ducky -
I think the answer to that has to be - all three!
I mean, what's a photographer without the background and personality?

I just got her "Revelations" and it gives you some fantastic insight into her life. And then you're able to look at her pictures differently.

She's tops right now.

Atget
Ronis
Doisneau
Brand
Shore

Some others I find top too, concerning quality on par with these top five. They don't touch my soul in the same way tho, which is best described with that "knowledge without experience" thing, as if I had known them personally in a former life.

I would not ever have the idea to rate myself for this shortlist 'cause I still gotta learn some things.. :-D

There are many but to name a few in no order of preference:

Wim Wenders, Eugene Richards, Alec Soth, James Whitlow Delano, David Dare Parker, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Duane Michels, Alexandra Boulat, Balazs Gardi and Donald Weber.

heh, I saw that Simon Larbalestier was the last post here and thought I'd post now because I'm going to include him on my list (for a particular body of work that influenced me greatly at one point in my life, albeit in conjunction with some very influential graphic design). So... not necessarily "top" 5, but at least 5 that come to mind:

Ralph Gibson, Nick Knight, Jeanloup Sieff, Simon Larbalestier, Andreas Bitesnich

j

It's hard to limit it to 5, but here would be my current list:

Andre Kertesz (first because he was my original inspiration into photography)
Robert Doisneau
Harry Callahan
Sebastiao Salgado
Hiroshi Sugimoto

No kidding, Chris! I know you really liked my Girl on the Bicycle shot... but that much?
As usual, you're being too nice, and as usual, I don't deserve it. I thoroughly enjoy your photography too and I'm always on the lookout. You should post more and you know it!
