Now that I have moved uo to an M6. Thanks for all of the advice with the choice. Do any of you use those diopter correction finders that sell for about $70.00 and how do they perform? It would well be worth it to me to shoot with no glasses. By the way here is my new toy.

I use them on each of my M's and like them v. much. They allow you to see all frames, which is not the case when wearing glasses. Look for used ones - they do turn up.

It depends on your presciption. The camera has a built-in diopter power of about -0.50 diopters so this must be factored into your choice. If your presciption has a significant amount of cylinder (astigmatism), say 0.75 diopters, it may not be as helpfull as you'd like. Also, anything above -2.00 diopters may prove problematic to see distance clearly with he naked eye once the camera is pulled away.

They work really well for me. My right eye optical prescription for eyeglasses is -1.75 spherical and no astigmatism. I had a Leica -2.0 diopter and have found that -1.5 is now better. Why the change? My prescription has not changed (for distance vision, e.g. driving) but as one gets older one's eyes' accomodation for focusing gets much less. Meaning that the diopter correction has to be more accurately chosen. Leica has them in 0.5 increments, whereas some manufacturers only supply in 1.0 increments. I would like -1.75 but it's not available. Go for less correction rather than more if you can't get the right value. My comments apply to short sight, as I have no experience with needing plus-value diopters for far sight. As has been mentioned, the viewfinder incorporates some value, which ought to be just right for someone with very good normal sight.
I strongly recommend trying a couple of values. Check different distances in not very good light. Used they are about half price or less on ebay.

I too have a -1.75 prescription. I use a -2 on my M3. Works great. Bought from HK on ebay. I seem to remember a thread discussing the -5 built in factor. From what I recall the -5 is to be ignored. Stu
