So I have this nice black G2 kit but only 1 original lens hood. Have been wanting to buy some after market hoods in 46mm (there is plenty to be had new) but wonder if anyone has measured the depth of each of the original hoods for the G-series lenses? I simply would want to get as close as possible to their original sizes. Thanks!

OK, still a mystery :)

Would anyone care to measure the depth of the hoods for the 28 and 45mm lenses? In the name of Science? Pretty please with sugar on top? Anyone...?

For what it's worth : my father had a G1 with the 28 and the 45 lenses. IIRC the 28 hood (GG-1) was 1cm deep and the 45 hood (GG-2) was 1.5cm deep.

Anyway with the 45mm Planar we always found the GG-2 hood to be a bit short (2.5cm in depth would have been better as for sunshading efficiency).

What counts more with third parties hoods vs. the original Kyocera goodies is the diameter of the hoods. There is a max. which you can't bypass unless you will block the AF beam. Not all third parties 46mm screw-in hoods have the same diameter.

The max. hoods diameter for the Contax G cameras is sometimes said to be 66mm (source :

*but* if you consider that Kyocera made the GG-1, GG-2 and GG-3 hoods to be 57mm in diameter, you rather should get third parties hoods with a diameter inf. or equal to 57mm to be sure not to block the AF beam.

Thank you! Just the info I was looking for, much appreciated.

The best hood for the 45 is a chinese vented and tilted 46mm hood. Just search on the bay. Around 15 $ it was. Why best: the rim and whole shade makes just a slim line in the viewfinder and you can see all the way into the SE corner of the viewfinder. Wish there were such a hood for the 28 mm. The chinese non tilted and vented one for 46 mm is wider, but it vignettes the film. Too bad ...

This is it, but IMO the best "value for money" bang you will get by buying it from seller "amynconnor". Just check item #130213992903.
