wondering what the now discontinued 50/2.8 m elmar is going for, used.

I bought one, in excellent condition, at my local shop for $550 a few months ago (s/n 38985xx). I really like this lens, and I'm having trouble not using it all the time. I'll post a couple of XP2 pics as soon as I finish scanning them.

I got one last year in mint condition for £160 ($320) on eBay UK, and I like it a lot. It is very sharp, as other people have said. But the one thing I'd be wary of is using it in very strong sun, because it is very contrasty - I wouldn't use it here in the tropical sun, for example.

'The "new" Elmarit 50f2.8 has one redeeming value ...
Performance with the new Elmarit is very good. I find it better than ...'
Wouldn't that be "Elmar" (or maybe, "Elmar-M"), rather than "Elmarit"?
I noticed the same. I think, Tom meant to say "Elmar M". Right Tom?

Here are a couple of recent snaps, both at f/11. The MFA pic was at ~2 sec, while the parade shot was obviously of much shorter duration.

I stated from the beginning, when Leica announced this lens that as a f2.8 - it should be named Elmarit, not Elmar as that indicated f3.5 or f4.0. Of course Leica ignored me! Oh well - my insistence on this nomenclature cpntinues though. In my mind it is an Elmarit 50f2.8! The 28 was an Elmarit, so was the 90's and even the proto-type 75f2.4 was designated APO-Elmarit!

Tom A --- thanks for the explanation. It makes sense, under the circumstances! Leica's naming scheme does seem to have the odd wart, here and there.

I bought a new one from Tony for about $595 (US) if my memory serves me right. That was before the price increases of course.

I finally solved my image-posting problem on this subject. See post 24 of this thread.
