Hello,
I just aquired an elmar 90f4 lens. Someone tell me if this
the worst flarring lens w/out the hood or am I missing something?
Its the thin elmar and I would also like to know the filter size
which is not 39mm. Any help would be greatly appreciated

If it's the pre war version (uncoated) it will flare more so than the post war version without a hood.

Filter size is slip-on A-36..

A clean Elmar is not overly prone to flare. However a lens hood such as the FIKUS helps. It takes the A36 clamp on filters.

Thanks Colyn,
Seems to me that this filter size may be a little had to find,
or are they as available as say the 39mm ?

They aren't too hard to find. eBay is your best bet. KEH also sometimes has a few.

I would also get a FIKUS lens hood..

If condition isn't great, it can be a flare monster. My first one just put a flare ball in the middle of the image with the slightest challenge, a coated one that had had most of the coating cleaned off due to serious haze. A clean one, coated or not, will be reasonably well behaved. I have an uncoated one that is very clear, and not flare-prone. Not a razor sharp lens, however. (If you want small, sharp, and light, get the Canon 100/3.5 lens.)

Filter is 34mm screw-in or A36 clamp-on. Leica A36 filters are common as dirt, and cheap, but generally not coated. 34mm filters are not nearly as easy to get, Leica made them, but comparatively rare. There's other Leica lenses that use the 34mm filters, and some Canon RF lenses that use them, so there's some out there, but not a lot.
