Could someone please explain what's causing this

Occasionally, with my later model FED 2, I get this thin over-exposed strip along the left edge of the image - it happens maybe 2 or 3 shots per roll, I don't know if it is at a certain speed. With the back off the shutter seems to be firing and winding on without a problem, and looking through the lens and firing the shutter at all speeds I can see no light leaks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Looks to me like the second shutter curtain is bouncing back at the end of its travel. Try cleaning the shutter and adjusting shutter tension as per the instructions in this sticky thread.

Thanks, I'll try that. Incidentally, is this more likely to happen at slow or fast shutter speeds? Or doesn't it matter?

Shouldn't make a difference, because the curtains are (or should be) always travelling at the same speed anyway; it's only the width of the slot between them that varies.

Dont the shutter curtains travel from right to left? If so, the leak happens on the right side (image is reversed), and shouldnt be caused by a bouncy shutter.

As manfromh says, a rebounding shutter would give a bright bar on the left of the frame. Looks more like the second curtain is hanging a little before closing. A good clean and adjust should sort that.

I have the same thing happen to me while my FED 3 was still functional, it seemed to only happen a 1/500th of a second and I could see the shutter bounce back when it did it.
