Finder Replacement Questions

Recently, I've found that my Ms have taken on certain specific tasks:

M7 for slide film (thank-you AE)
MP for low-light (usually mated to the Noctilux)
MP-3 for 160-400 C-41
and the M8 in the back of the cupboard 😛

In light of the use it's getting, I'm considering sending the MP to Solms to get the finder switched out from its present .72 to .85.

Quick question: is it worth it? Is the difference in magnification noticeable on the 50mm?

Also, does anyone know how much it is to do, and how long would it take?

A few years ago when Leica started the a-la-carte program, Leica charged $900 to change out a rangefinder - I am quite sure it's more now.

Cost-wise, you would be much better off selling your .72 camera outright and using the proceeds toward a .85.

You would gain a bit in focusing accuracy which could be important with the Noctilux. I usually try to have my Noct. on my M3 but the M6 .72 will work. Joe

I should have added that the Noctilux works well on my M6 .85 non ttl so it should be good on an MP .85 Joe.

Julian, I bought one of the Megaperl eye piece magnifiers, the 1.15 version, mainly for the adjustable dioptre feature. It lives on my .58 M6 permanently. Putting one on your .72 would turn it into a .83. Not quite .85 but for less than 200 bucks it's an option.

I would highly recommend Leica's 1.25x mag adapter. They are not cheap, but they work quite well (I use one on my M8). This solution would most certainly me more economical than a new finder and probably selling your .72 and buying a .85 (.72 x 1.25x = 0.90) too.
