what model M6?

Hi All,

I presently have a M3 and while I love this camera I would like another body to complement it. I shoot slides and feel that an M6 would be a great
2nd body. I know there are several versions and I was wondering if I could tap into the great knowledge base of the RFF members. I wear glasses and presently have two 50mm lenses; a Canon 1.4 and a collapsible summicron. I prefer 50mm lenses but would probably be adding a 35mm down the line.

Since given that I'm an eyeglass wearer who prefers a 50mm lens is there one model of the m6 that would best suit my needs?
 
Any of the 0.72x versions would probably suit your needs as a glasses wearer and 50mm user. It might be tough seeing the entire 35mm framlines with glasses though, to which the 0.58x viewfinder would be better for.

On my m3 I need to constantly shift my view around to see everything on the viewfinder edges. I was hoping that perhaps another kind of body would enable me to see the entire 50mm frame at once.
 
i do wear glasses and own 2 "classic .72" M6s. but for the kind of photography i do, seeing the framelines is not all that important. i was going to suggest the 0.85 until you mentioned adding a 35mm lens.

however, the newer TTL models have larger shutter speed dial which i occasionally wish i had. makes it easier to use with camera (and fingers) in trigger position.

So, if I was to have a m6 dedicated to a 50mm the 0.85 would be the best choice?
 
I think once you use the M6 it will become your primary camera. The first thing to consider is the difference between the M6 classic & the M6ttl. Once that is settled you next need to decide which framelines suit you best...depending on the lenses you are going to use and your eyesight.

Because of the kind of film I'm shooting, (slide), I find myself spending alot of time trying to fine tune the exposure by glancing at my MR meter. I would like to spend more time looking thru the viewfinder where I can control the exposure. I'm looking forward to trying out a M6. My eyesight is not terrible but I need to wear glasses. I like the 50mm angle of view. And
there are so many great 50s out there.

Maybe, maybe not. I think the M6 .85x is the best M6, but that's a personal choice. I don't use 28mm much and 21mm means going for an accy finder anyway. I wear glasses but I have fitted correction lenses on my M bodies. That basically solves the problem, but if you wear glasses and want to use a 35mm lens while wearing glasses, the .85x version is probably a bad choice because the 35mm frames are quite far out toward the edges of the finder.

i second JNewell, i really wished i had one 0.85 version and the other .72 version. the former for 50mm or longer focal lengths and 0.72 for the wider ones 21 or 28. if i go wider than a 28mm i just use my voigtlander bessa t or bessa l with separate viewfinder. but try out both (or all three) viewfinders at the shop if they have them there.
 
I had the M3 and swapped it for the M6TTL 0.85x. Reason ? I wear eye-glasses and the 50mm frame lines were a tad to tight for me in the M3 with its 0.91x VF magnification. 0.85x is optimal for me since I see the 50mm FL with a small space around and the magnification is still sufficient to precisely focus lenses like 50/1.0 and 90/2.0.

35mm is possible with the 0.85x but not ideal. For this purpose I use a meter-less M4-P with 0.72x VF.

I also found, that TTL metering works best for 50mm and longer (smaller spot) but gets more erroneous for 35mm (usually to much sky or bright light sources in the frame)
