Light Hunter - RIP 2010
Anyone know much about it? I'm look at an M6 in an estate auction this coming week end with one on it. It looks a little ratty but suspect it nothing Sherry can't clean up. Should I go for this combination? I going to dig out my Puts book to learn more. It looks like a nice addition to my M8 lens set plus gives me an M6 along with the M3 and M4.

Search a bit in the archives here, and on Photo.net; there are lots and lots of comments about this lens. (Use Google, not the local search functions.)
In a word: If it's in good shape, it's a terrific lens. One of the Best Buys of Leicadom.

I'm not sure what that is screwed on the nose in place of the collapsible rubber hood. Does it serve a purpose? Can it be removed easily?
The lens is a gem. I had a couple, but sold them after I picked up a 35mm UC Hexanon, which fit my personal tastes better.
I have no idea how the 40mm Summicron performs on the M8, though it performed fine on my R-D1 and made a very tidy, compact package into the bargain.
Why not go for it? Especially if you want the M6.
