I have had my M8 for a few months and have set it to number photos continuously. All has gone well until this weekend when I used it on a trip to Kyoto. At the end of every day, I downloaded the photos I shot into my laptop and deleted the photos from the SD cards. However, I found that the numbers of some of the photos I shot the following day would overlap with those of some of the photos I had shot the previous day. Has any one else experienced this problem?
Incidentally, this started to happen after I got the camera back from servicing.

Mine reset to zero a couple of times in the first few months, but has been numbering continuously for well over a year now. I half-recall reading that this was something to do with not formatting the cards before using them. Whether that is related to your problem or not, I cannot say.

Thank you for your quick reply.
That may well be the cause of the problem because on this trip I started to use a new Sandisk Ultra II SD card without formatting it. However, when I discovered the problem, I did ask myself if it had anything to do with my not having formatted the card and therefore I formatted the card. The problem persisted even after I had formatted the card.

I did have noticed the same behaviour. Please read http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47527
Everything works great now

PS : I've noticed also that when the SD is formatted by the M8, you do not have to format it when you've downloaded the pics as long as the SD is dedicated to the M8. If you load it to an other digicam, you'll have to format it.
