Does anyone know how long it generally took for the Canon squeal to manifest?
And when did Canon change the type of lube/grease to stop this problem? From somewhere I can't recall I've been lead to understand that with the right lube/grease the problem shouldn't come back: but I might be wrong about that.

On a german site (http://www.aldo-net.com/Canon/) I read, that the squeal does only manifest in the A-series. I own a FTb QL and a T70 that don´t have the squeal, my A-1 (1981) had it. I repaired it as shown on the above site and it didnt come back in the last two years. I simply used sewing-machine oil.

Thanks, Petronius.
Do those instructions make it relatively easy for non-engineer to fix an A-1, which is the camera I wish to fix? I don't know german, so I thought to ask before I tackle the translation problem.

lorriman, I had no problems to fix the problem, I just followed the pictures. Here http://www.kyphoto.com/classics/forum/messages/6900/4800.html?1121620031 I found a discussion of the same theme, maybe it can help you in combination with the photos.

Ok, thanks for that.
Do you have a fair bit of experience fiddling with cameras? I have none, so I may need to weigh up the chances.

As Hans said. I tried to repair several cameras, sometimes with luck, sometimes ...
