Interesting Current Working Photographers

I was thinking of responding in the Annie Leibovitz thread but decided to start a new thread instead.

My thought was that of current working photographers, there are three that I can always get something (interesting, useful, inspiring, whatever) out of. Ms. Leibovitz is one of them.

For me the other two are David Barnett & David Plowden.

What are they for you?

IMO, there is only one important photographer alive and working today and that is his holiness Sebastian Salgado of Brazil.

For environmental portraiture, I don't think there's any better than Phil Borges : http://www.philborges.com/books-prints.html

Ah. His _holiness_? Could you please explain this? All I see is a talented photographer mining the same vein that many others have been doing since the 35mm camera came out. What is supposed to be all that special about his work?

I do ask this in all sincerity as I see nothing to distinguish him from, say, Robert Capa's work in WWII or Spain.

I'm not really up on contemporary photography...I should subscribe to Aperture or something. In any event, I like Jonas Beniksen a lot, and William Eggleston (still). And in the realm of hyper-non-rangefindery photographer, I am big into Jeff Wall and Gregory Crewdson. Not that I would even bother trying to do what they do, but their stuff gets me very excited.

Personally I prefer Alex Soth, Alex Majoli, and Alex Webb...

Oh and you cannot forget Robb Kendrick.

Thank you, a couple of names there I'm unfamilier with so I've some fun ahead looking into them.

Tyler Hicks, Lynsey Addario and Dorothy Hong.

Without fail, looking at any of their work is a huge inspiration. Sometimes it makes me want to put the camera down and quit. other times it makes me want to get out there and see what I'm made of.

Barnett?

Barnett?

You must be referring to David Burnett of Contact Press. I'd add Eugene Richards to the list.

René Burri, Abbas, Elliott Erwitt, David Alan Harvey, Antonin Kratochvil, Alexandra Boulat. Besides, a vote each for Jim Natchwey, William Eggleston and Sebastiao Salgado

wolfgang tilmans, hiroshi sugimoto, gillian laub, gregor schneider, et. al.
