Today, I found that I had no stock ID11 left. I didn't want to mix a new batch, so I tried a bottle of Rodinal (my first) given to me by a club member.
I've used it before on Delta100 and FP4+ and liked the results, but had not thought that I might use it on APX400 and HP5+, which I did tonight.
First I developed 2 x 120 rolls of HP5+ in 500ml at 1:50 for 11mins. I was a little surprised when I poured the solution from the tank into a jug. It was yellow. I don't recall such a colour change when I did the Delta100 and FP4+ (individually).
I then tried an experiment and developed a 35mmm roll of APX400s in the solution used for the HP5+. When that had finished I poured the developer down the drain. This time it was dark purple.
Is the colour an indication of how exhausted it is or is it something picked up from the film?
The films are hung up in my bathroom..er....drying room. they look ok at the moment.

That's normal. It's just the anti-halation layer being washed off the film. For some reason Rodinal always seems to show this up more dramatically than other devs, but it's nothing to worry about. If you were to try pre-soaking your films in plain water before developing them, the water would show the same color cast as you drained it off.

It takes many years to exhaust Rodinal. I have used bottles that were more than 10 years old without any problem. The concentrate turns to a dark reddish-brown color with time, but it still works fine.
As said above, the purple color is the anti-halation layer. For some reason it comes out quite strong in Rodinal.

Yeah, I've noticed the color change too. My bottle is only a couple months old but it's reddish brown...I am souping some Tri-X in it right now in fact.

Don't re-use Rodinal after it's been diluted---pure poison.
The color of the stuff after it comes out of the developing tank seems to differ, depending on the film.

Rodinal is quite unique as it is perfectly usable even if it looks like Pepsicola.
That is the p-amino-phenol that goes out of solution and comes back when needed since rodinal is a saturated/oversaturated solution.

I think its Efke that comes out bright pink in Rodinal. Although it might be ilfosol S, can't remember off the top of my head. Worried me quick a bit the first time I saw that.

Exactly, and it will work even if the Rodinal is almost black.
Rodinal is most suitable for slow- and medium speed classical cubical films. Use slow agitation and an optimum temperature just under 20 degrees C. to keep the grain under control.
Dilutions: 1+25 till over 1+100. The minimum amount of concentrate for Rodinal is officially 10ml/135-36 or 120 roll film but the real minimum which can guarantee under all circumstances a film is about 5,5-6ml/film.
Different films, different colors which comes out with the A.H. layer. It's normal with Rodinal.
Rodinal is a one shot developer.

Tri-X developed in 30+ year old Rodinal. Konica Auto S2 and Kalart flashgun using No. 5 photo flashbulb.
The spent developer (1:31) pours out black. It's a wonderful thing... the adjacency effect and grain structure. Ya just gotta see the print... visually very exciting.
And don't forget tonight... 6:00 ~ 9:00 PM. "Small Works" at Lana Santorelli Gallery, 110 West 26th Street, NYC, Ground Floor. From what I understand it's gonna be an infrared flashbulb happening. Be there !!!
