Has anyone ever used one of these 35's from canon? I'm in the market for a new lens but don't wanna spend too much.

It is a small and very sharp lens with medium contrast. It is being more and more being praised, resulting in having its selling price raised. For its cost, it still is a bargain.
Some will advise you to get a used CV lens or a Jupiter 12 35mm/2.8, which is a Biogon copy.

A very good little lens. Super companion to a classic RF, Canon or Leica.

Yes, I have such a lens. Else, I would not volunteer made-up information on it.

Is there a Canon/Leica/Zeiss/Jupiter lens which Raid DOES NOT own?

Dan,
I don't own any modern lenses and no valuable lenses that collectors own.
I have only one CV lens. I really don't own many RF lenses.

I borrowed this lens over the summer from RFF member bobkonos and shot a roll w/ it in San Francisco. I liked the results so much I picked up one on ebay, and it's been mounted on my M2 ever since. As Raid said, it's a high resolution lens w/ low to moderate contrast, which makes a nice counterweight to the contrasty CV 35/2.5 skopar. I like that you can shoot w/ it on bright sunny days and not blow out highlights:

LOL!!!! How many 50s are you down to now, Raid?

Steve: You got me! I may have 16-18 50mm lenses, but the rest of the focal lengths are barely covered. To me, RF photography is about using your 50mm lens. The rest of the lenses are "add-ons" or maybe "luxury items" but not essential at all.

On an R-D1, for me it seems to be all about using your 35mm lens.
Now I have three 35s, including the Canon 35/2.8 -- which was my first. It's a very nice lens, good on bright days, as has been noted already. The chrome version is very small and solidly built. The black/chrome version is not so compact, but a little more ergonomic, IMO, and its front element is more deeply recessed, making a shade unnecessary. (I guess I really have four 35s, two of which are the Canon!)
My other 35s are a Summaron 35/2.8 LTM and a UC-Hexanon 35/2. So far, just by gut impression, the UC-Hexanon is the "best" for sharpness, color rendering and bokeh. But there's something about the Canon's tonal rendering in B/W that keeps it in the running. I'll have to do some more controlled comparisons soon and share the results.

On an RD-1, a 35mm is close to 50mm on a RF camera. You are a "50mm Man".

I love the 1.8/50 Canon RF lens and attached is a photo with it. I put it on a Bessa R and got these great colors.

Funny - I almost bought that excellent quality from KEH that I guess Noah snapped up hot on my heels. It was in my shopping cart and I was starting to check out. But, then I remembered how good their "bargain" grade lenses were.
So I stopped, hit the back arrow and selected the one for $149, way-cheaper and listed as Bargain Canon 35/2.8. It turned out to be a Serenar, the older name, an all chrome lens, heavy (for it's size), small and in very good shape. A bit tighter to focus than usual, but not really any kind of a problem.
As Steve said, it's more low contrast than medium constrast. On many color shots of my first roll I actually needed to up the contrast by 20% - something I'd never done before. I need to use it with BW, which is why I bought it. Very non-modern.

I have owned the original Canon (earliest models were labled Serenar) all chrome 34mm filter size version since the mid-70s. It's really well made. Tiny. Quite nice. Like Raid said, I wouldn't say it if I didn't own and use the lens.

Has anyone had experience w/ the Canon 35/2.8 and Kodak BW400cn? I'd be v. interested in seeing some results. I've liked the results I've gotten w/ this film and the 50/1.8 and 50/1.5 lenses (deep blacks and nice mid-tones), but have yet to try it out w/ my new-to-me 35/2.8. My next roll w/ this lens will be w/ this film.
