Mission accomplished and well done!
My Gramps was out in the Pacific and fought in Battle of Guadalcanal although I did not know it until his funeral and one of his war buddies filled me in on that part of my Gramps life. He never spoke his service other than telling me he was going to send me to boot camp if I did not behave. 😀

My grandfather was at Guadalcanal as well with the US army. He never did talk about it, but upon the pressing of a nine year old boy he did explain how to throw a handgrenade properly, infromation I have not as yet had time to make use of, and why you shouldnt drop a US army property bazooka over a cliff.

My grandfather spent some time in jail and his job saved him from the "Ostfront".

Its healthy to laugh about such monsters (when you can) but its also I suppose good to remember the magnitude of what he inflicted.
My wife is Russian and tells me that Russia lost 20m people in the war. (Thats the whole present day population of Australia.) And how many Germans died because of his monstrosity? My father was Hungarian and lost the better part of his extended family in the Nazi murder camps when they decided to kill of Hungarian Jewry. But I think its OK to laugh about him ranting about something stupid. Its a way of dealing with the memory of what he did.
BTW this clip comes from a brilliant German film named "Der Untergang" or in English, "The Downfall." Watch it if you have not already done so - its an extremely interesting and well made record of his last days based on two books by people who were there.

I second that movie recommendation. It is such an honest look at the man that you actually see him for the person he was, and it is an eye opener, a scary eye opener.

I watched Der Untergang three times, then dragged my wife to a fourth. This movie is brilliantly executed and deeply, deeply disturbing. Besides the jaw-dropping performance by Bruno Ganz, the depiction by Corinna Harfouch of Magda Goebbels is both twisted and heartbreaking. She reportedly made herself sick from that role. The movie was a German/Russian co-production with some filming in St Petersburg (a touching gesture). The technical quality makes the viewing of this movie completely immersive.
In a lighter vein is "Pane e Tulipani", with Bruno Ganz playing a waiter in a Chinese restaurant in Venice. He really is a master of the acting trade, and unsullied by Hollywood.

Watched the film and must agree it is a terrific piece of historical work with outstanding performances and a real atmosphere of evil and despair in that bunker...but they deserved no less.

Despite what so many Americans think there are a great many here in the UK who know and respect what you Americans did in the Pacific.
I have a photo assignment on Tarawa next year.
While we are here we should also be aware of the huge involvement and sacrifice of the former Soviet people.
Enough of this ...I fancy a 'dayglow' M 8 with built in flash and a $10,000 engraving saying 'What a fool'.
