it has a big lovely viewfinder and a rangefinder that can rival a Leica M3 for focus accuracy.
the styling is late sixties/early seventies "chunky ukrainian".

Hello
I have read positive comments about it several times, it seems to be a good camera. It has the infamous lateral rewind crank, not clearly visible in the photos - and there is a mistake about the lens description, it is not a Jupiter-8, but an Helios 94.
A few Kiev-5 cameras came with the mytical lens Rekord-4 (0,9/52 mm !!!), but I've never seen any of those.
Concerning the estethics.......
. something in it reminds me my pretty SLR Kiev-10, same family, similar look....
Regards
Joao

I really dislike the FSUs with the Selenium lightmeter.

I like it.
My "vote" for the ugliest FSU camera has to be the "desert storm leica". I think some folks may remember that one. It was a hideously repainted Zorki 2c (maybe?). I thought I had downloaded a picture of it but I can't find it.
Second runner up is any of the fake/repainted "leicas".

Hehe I just bought one

Actually two things here: 1) If you like I will not speak badly of it or you.
and 2)Didn't I read recently that you may re-habilitate it?
Which one did you get?

Yes, it's really ugly. But it's one of the most rare and expensive Kiev rangefinders.

It is a good camera (at least my specimen). I used it and right now I am on my knees thanking that I got one while it was still affordable. It is clunky and really big! Seems as if a prototype who had all the features the people wanted went straight into production. I used it when taking pics of readings or concerts. I especially like the choice to transport with the lever or the knob.
I remember that several years ago I read articles where people wondered if that acmera existed or if the few photos known of it did not show prototypes.
149 GBP is a decent price

I could put up with the looks of the Kiev 5 for the Rekord-4 lens (if it had one)
Rob, it may be rehabilitated - I'll see what shape it's in (Zorki S)

It's not beautiful, but it's a decent camera actually. The viewfinder is the best I've seen in any Soviet rangefinder. They're a bit expensive; here in Tashkent you'd have to pay some $150-$200 (assuming you find one, which is difficult already). Then again that's not much money; some people spend that on an external viewfinder or a lens hood.
It's certainly not uglier than those Leica M5/Automatic/Compur prototypes that float around on eBay for six-digits figures every now and then.
