These may not be "classics," but:
Gordon Parks' retrospective Half Past Autumn was a huge book for me - it turned me from studying science into studying art. It really showed me the "ways" of the photojournalist.
Diane Arbus Revelations was really enjoyable to read

I saw you liked the Luc Delahaye - Winterreise. Could you please elaborate what do you like about this book?
Sure the image quality is professional and the photographer has gotten himself to pretty interesting situations. Still I believe this books is truly weak and even dangerous as it plays on the sterotypes of Russia and fortifies the Otherness of the Russia in the Western eye. It is not able and doesn' really even try in any sense to comprehend the real life and problems of post-socialist Russia.
I believe the work by Delahaye is intellectually substandard and it truly amazes me why this book and books of its kind get praize. The photojournalist or artist should be able to show something real as in not purely aesthetic and not show the image the average Western person already has in his head about the decay of Russia.

Regarding the original post. The photographer by HCB is great but still not definitive by any means even though the most famous one are found in this book (all the pictures from Mgnum site for example). I'm not sure though if a definitive like that exists.

Almost any David Douglas Duncan book except his last.
His 'Self Portrait USA' completely changed my newspaper work when I perused it and saw how powerful faces were as expressions of emotions. Bruce Davidson is another but you have to learn how Bruce works which is great insight into how to photograph individuals you don't know.-Dick

Dave Heath - A Dialogue With Solitude.
Larry Clark - Tulsa.
1st edition prices are sky-high for both. Dave's book was reprinted back in 2000, and even they're seeing $ 500.00 prices.
I like Bresson's 'Portraits'.

I would recommend the DVD series, "Contacts 1, 2, 3." If you are on a budget, i would just get the first DVD Contacts 1, which is about PJ. Contacts 2 is more conceptual photography.
As far as books are concerned, I would simply suggest that you go to a used book store that has a good selection of New and Used photography books, and buy a few that appeal to you the most, according to what you like.
Also, amazon, and their is this bookstore in New York called Dashwood book, and i think you can find them Online as well; they provide a list of new and used books.

One of my favorite Andre Kertesz books is his small, simple, cheap "On Reading." There is no reading to it, just a look into how well Kertesz "saw" and captured this one theme on film.

Not a huge fan of "War Photographer," it all seemed a little over-hyped to me, but to each their own...
Sebastião Salgado's "Workers" is one of the most outstanding photography books (not just photojournalism) I've ever laid my eyes on. It's absolutely stunning. HIGHLY recommended.
