No more film at Cosco

I just got back from Cosco where I learned that they will no longer carry film. The offical explanation was that because it was a bulk package of 6 rolls (24 exp. Fuji Superia 400), most customers were not interested in having that many rolls at one time, especially now that most every families have at least one cheap digital camera.

It sucks for people like me who went through 6 rolls in a month, and were happy to have a cheap color film, perfect for everyday snapshots.

I wonder if their film development services are next, although they seem to have invested in some new Noritsu machines to replace the Fujis.

It would seem logical that if you are a discount store and don't sell film, your processing of film is going to drop like a rock.

No matter how many times I tell them that I don't like having to buy 3 jars of mustard at a time... they have the audacity to keep selling mustard.

People still use mustard on a regular basis but not film it seems.

Every now and then when Im at costco I stop by the film department to ask for the empty film cassettes for bulk loading. These days I only walk away with a dozen or so cassettes. Sometimes I strike a goldmine and wind up with a huge bag but those only come after the holidays.

Now that they've discontinued the Fuji 400 film, Im starting to wonder where I can get my empty film cassettes.

Try SamsClub. They still sell Kodak film...barely!

The last two times I was Costco, I was looking for their multi-roll packs of cheap Fuji Superia, but I couldn't find any. Now my suspicions that Costco was dropping their film sales have been confirmed. It's disappointing that a good, cheap source has dried up.

I ended up ordering from B&H instead.

They dump food and other stuff when it does not sell, I expect the same for film. It does not flow through the lines, they stop carrying it. It sucks but it's the new world.

The Madison Costco still had a box of Fuji Superia 400, 6 roll pack for $5.99, but the processing is gone: just a greasy square on the floor behind the counter where the machine used to be.

Anyone have a source for mail order C41, process only? I'm back with film after a 5 year layoff, I don't mind digital cameras but they don't come with superwides.

The Nashua, NH Costco dropped their Fuji packs a month or two ago... I got the last 9 or 10.

My local Target also appears to have stopped selling film... I don't think it was just "out dated".

Dwayne's works well, and will do process only. If you send a bunch at a time, it keeps the overall shipping costs down.

I asked the person running the processing station at my local Costco about their future plans for processing and was told that even though volume is down, they have no plans to stop. Interestingly enough, she said most of their business was over the Web. The rest was people coming in with their memory cards and about 20% film. So I guess I'm safe for the time being. However, I haven't seen film being sold there for some time. Only disposable cameras.

The solution to the film problem is to order larger quantities of it from the large mail-order places. B&H and Adorama have 36-exposure rolls of Superia 100-400 for around $2 US a roll. If you buy enough rolls, even with shipping it's reasonably priced. I get the grey-market film and I find it to be just fine (although the film I bought personally at B&H in November was US market).

I used to buy the Superia 400 packs at Costco with the coupons--came out to $1 per 24-exp roll. You can find some good deals on eBay these days...I recently got 20 rolls of Superia 200 and 26 rolls of Kodak 400UC for about $1.50 per 36-exp roll, after shipping.
