Confused GSN owner

OK, so I have been reading about GSN's and POD's (pads of death) for about a year now and bought a really nice MG1 and GTN a while ago from a member. They work well and when you advance the film the make that click/clunk sound that I have come to expect.

I just recently bought a really nice GSN from a member here and its soooo mint, but when I advance the film it is totlely quite. I have tested the light readings, which match my other Yashicas perfectly and I can see the shutter open and close (from the rear of the camera) when I fire the shutter butten.....but no clunk when I work the advance lever.

So, is there a problem???? Help.

I had one like that - the POD had gone a bit soft & sticky - had to change it after a few months. Of course YMMD 😉

Yes, John I guess thats what i was concerned about. I suppose I will need to get more acquainted with Y Man and his site....I'm just not very good at camera work.

If the POD is deteriorated, which it definitely sounds like, then the travel of your meter contacts will be thrown off, possibly causing weird things to happen when metering.

If there is no clunk on winding the film, this means that, because of the reduced travel caused by the deteriorated POD, the rod with the contacts is not latching in the down position when the shutter is tripped and the meter is not deactivated. This could cause the battery to go dead in a very short time.

Your mileage may vary, of course...

I'm confused to ....
So the klunk noise is good and no noise is bad? generally speaking 🙂 Because it just doesn't seem right to me, but i guess a roll of film will be the final judge huh?

sometimes sort of klunk is present, though pad is deteriorated beyond to extent where metering isn't proper anymore. It pays to check pad by removing top cover.

"Film check" - it depends on total costs, I assume 🙂 I wouldn't do it with fresh, expensive film developed + prints. Cheap film + my own scanning would be my track.

Yes, it appears that some "clunk" is normal and a completely quite advance is trouble.
