I JUST finished developing my first roll of film... it looks like I've had success! I see nice clear picture negatives in every frame!

Film is hanging to dry in my shower now... hope to scan some in a few hours when they are dry, then I'll share my first official results :)

YOU GUYS ALL ROCK for convincing me to do this and holding my hand along the way while I learn. I can tell you, as I did everything tonight I was questioning myself every single step of the way. I was SOOOO happy to see actually developed negatives when I was done!!

And you were ALLLLLL right. Anyone who argues that developing is scary or hard should think again. Listen to the ones here who try to convince you to develop you're own film. YOU CAN DO IT!

I'm a convert... THANK YOU ALL AGAIN!

Way to go! Great sense of accomplishment, hey? Let the film get totally dry. 4-6 hours depending on conditions. Longer won't hurt. Scanning damp fragile negatives will HURT! Been there. Done that.
 
Welcome to the inner circle! Just don't get caught up in the "I gotta try every formula and mix my own from scratch" syndrome or you'll never get anything done. D-76, Rodinol, and Diafine should give you enough adventures.
 
Good stuff! I've been doing my own film for just a few months now and it is so cool to see the negs come off the reel.

WoW...Congratulations! Your success really encourage me to do it myself. Would you mind summarizing your film development experience in step by step so others can follow yours? Also a list of chemicals & tools you used would be helpful.

2.5 years ago, I was where DRabbit was, and now I am where you just described Al. :)

I am mixing my own batch of Thornton's formula next week... *sigh* There is no hope for me, is there?

I stuck to D76 until it was gone, I have Rodinal, but not sure how to use it so I'l read more and continue with my new batch of D76.


Congrats! I remember the first time I saw something on the negative--I was so happy. That is the best feeling about photography IMO!

Looking forward to your scans and your workflow :D

Yes. LOL - I have those three and only those three and looped back to mainly D76.

Amy, from now on your photography will be different. There is a huge sense of "I did it" when you hang up the film to dry. I have probably developed 30-40 000 rolls in my lifetime, both as a "privateer" and working as photographer and the thrill does not go away. Just souped 10 rolls and waiting for the last to wash. Nothing special, 5 rolls of Legacy Pro/Neopan 400 and 5 rolls of Agfa Scopix X-ray film (a friend gave me 1200 ft of it - so I better figure out how to develop it and shoot it).
Great fun and you will shoot more and start adjusting your films and developing to what suits you.
Enjoy the ride and relish in the smell of fix!

Now, if this has been Tri X or Arista Premium 400, make sure you put it in the sleeves and then under some even board like the bread cutting one you might have in the kitchen. This film tends to bulge in the middle, so unless you scan it flattened by a glass, the image will not appear entirely sharp. I wait for 2-3 days and then most of the bulge will be gone.

I've already commented on your image thread, Amy. But I agree with Al and the others here about leaning the ins and outs of one developer. However, I started with an easier one, D-76. And the only other one I've used is T-Max dev for T-max P3200 film. I did get a roll of T-max 400 though, that I want to compare to my usual 400 film, Arista Premium 400 (Tri-X0.
 
FYI All... I didn't forget about you... just been playing with new digital cameras recently. I finished up a roll of film today and developed my second roll (this one was Arista Premium 100, so interested to see that compared to the 400). Hopefully will have time to scan them tomorrow!
