Hello everybody,

I've got a nice Olympus SP with a stuck shutter. I can't find too much info on the net how to get to the shutter blades which might need a good cleaning with lighter fluid.

Does anybody got some info on how to get to the shoutter blades? Is it possible DIY? or shall I send the Camera to a CLA?

Thanks, Michael

Michael:

You have a nice, quality camera and I'd get it CLA'd if I were you. Mine needed it and had to also have the lens cleaned internally too due to spot "fogging" of images. I hope it works out for you.

Foam re-sealing instructions can found here:http://www.kyphoto.com/classics/sealreplacement.html. The foam can be bought thru Ebay seller "Interslice".

I agree with both Bill and Rick. I have an SP that John serviced, and he did a great job, including re-skinning. The only way, as a non-tech, that I would work on an SP is if it is spare to me and I could afford to muck it up. I have three SPs; one needs some work on the shutter release, which I will do myself. The other needs new seals, and I'll do that too. The latter I could send off to John in the event it needs a full CLA, but the former I would be stuck with since John will NOT work on an item that has been opened up by a user.

I just did an Olympus 35 S. To get to the shutter blades, you just remove the front lens element. Thing is, I've done three other cameras afterward and I don't remember whether you need a friction wrench or a lens wrench to take it out. If the ring around the front lens element has notches in the edges, it was a lens wrench.

This is a lens wrench:

This is a friction wrench:

Both are available from Micro Tools http://www.micro-tools.com/ If you need the friction wrench, then you need to measure to see what size to get. The lens wrench is adjustable.

Edit: If all else fails, you can send it to me and I will do a simple flush and scrub of the shutter blades and gearing, and I'll replace the seals, for $40. That will get rid of your problems if they are due to sticky shutter syndrome. A full CLA will cost more.

Thanks a lot FallisPhoto! Really helpfull, but a bit to late (sic!)...

I figured it out myself, it's fairly easy to get to the blades from the front, and you need a spanner wrench. I flushed everything with lighter fluid (this takes some time and repetition). So it's working again now. And it definitely is a nice little camera, indeed. Still on my first film with it, but sure a pleasure to use.

Thanks everybody for your comments, cheers
Michael
