Getting a bit confused. Understand there is the old version and the new ASPH version. Are there 3 material types: anodized black (assume that is aluminum?); silver (bronze); and black paint. So, is the black paint of bronze material? Is only the black ASPH lens of aluminum (if that is indeed the anodized metal)? Appreciate anyone lifting the fog. Thanks

Why would you assume aluminum? Some are painted black, and some are anodized. - Ben Marks

Thanks RITskellar. Benjamin, far as I know (not very far) you can't anodize other metals, only aluminum.

I realize you're primarily concerned with the outer materials, but there may be about 3 pre-asph versions, then the ASPH.
The first two optical designs have 43mm filters, and 1m close focus, the latest pre-asph has a 46mm filter size, and .7m close focus, and possibly just a difference in coatings vs the #2 pre-asph.

Just to add I've owned all versions and while some feel the 46mm version is better than the 43mm version I never really noticed any difference in the final results. The ASPH version is a HUGE improvement but unfortunately very costly.
Right now I have the 1st version and the CV 50/1.5. Not a lot difference but I think I prefer the Summilux, it certainly is built better. I need to get around to selling one of them.

Great info.
Great info.
Yeah, the close focus of the 46 would be useful for me, but I ended up with a 43mm v2, recently CLA'd, so I'm going to give it a try.
The CV 50/1.5 is a good lens.

Me neither. I think the advantages of the E46 are in the handling: 0.7M closest focus, much shorter focus throw, and no more fiddling around with 43mm filters that don't screw in properly....while some feel the 46mm version is better than the 43mm version I never really noticed any difference in the final results...

I have the proper hood and always had the right filters so that was no problem but in the last few years I've picked up a number of Leica lenses and they now seem to have settled on 46 mm so I do sort of wish I had the 46 ver. "close focus" I never understood, ain't really no such thing with a RF. A few inches closer doesn't do anything for me.and no more fiddling around with 43mm filters that don't screw in properly.

Thanks. Would this have the 43 or 46 filter? Any thing different other than focus ring?

According to the Dick Gilcreast article, the interrupted scalloped focus ring pre-dated the continuous knurled ring, so I'd double check that it's an E46. What's the S/N?
The change from 43 to 46, again, according to the Gilcreast article, referencing Lager, is somewhere around 69/70, around 242xxxx. Please someone correct me if there is better info.
I highly recommend you communicate with the seller in advance to verify the 46 filter size, and .7m focus, if that is the version you are expecting.
Got my first roll back from my V2 E43, very pleased. But still want to compare/test the E46 version.

What he has pictured is definitely a "Millenium" special edition E46, pre-ASPH in black paint (with pull out hood and .7 meter focus). Which would have a serial number of 400XXXX. Given the limited view of the lens in this picture, it also looks similar to the LHSA E46 black paint version of the latest ASPH lens, if not for the difference in size of the focus ring.

It is nice. It is bigger and heavier that a v.2 E43 but I find the shorter focus throw to be its best feature. People go on about the 0.7M closest focus of the v.3 but I at least seem to need that with the shorter focal lengths, not the 50.

Hi Peter
Hi Peter
For past SLR users, the 1m distance is a long ways out ...
for most any fl., IMHO.
