I own two of these exact cameras. Once you shoot film based stereo, it's hard to go back to normal 2d photography. It's a sickness... a very slippery slope indeed. And yes, the lenses are linked.
On one body I dedicate a pair of Tri Elmars, 16-18-21, synced linkage on 1) focus, 2) apt. and 3) zoom. Quite impressive stereo images....as Super wide angle lenses were never commonplace on any stereo cameras. This is where the M mount shines. The 35/50 f2 ZM lenses are also superb for this rig. Longer fl's are not very applicable as you must start extending the lens separation, in which case dual cameras with linked shutters are more practical.
RED is producing a 60MP digital stereo rig due end of 09.... $135k... That makes these film based stereo rigs a bargain....
