My new favorite film

OK, here's a somewhat color corrected version of one of those, and a crop. I prefer my blue/green cast versions. FWIW, I can't imagine choosing or rejecting a film based on a color cast, if you are going to be scanning. It is easy to fix if you don't like it. The scans are with the Nikon 5000ED and Vuescan, no sharpening.

Here is the original pic + a 100% crop shot with 800Z.
35 Cron Asph. Scanned @4000dpi TIFF 16-bit on Nikon 5000 ED. Only post processing is converted to 8-bit JPEG.

Even my local pro-photo store, with it's steadily dwindling offerings of film types, has 5 packs in 35mm and 120.

As for the film itself, it's the only color I shoot anymore, specifically because of the cooler colors. I can't stand the reds and yellows of portra!
(by the by, the lower saturation and cooler cast is the way the film was designed to be, I've got a fuji databook around here somewhere that lists the differences)

@mabelsound, I'm surprised you have that much grain in your negatives. Whenever I used NPZ it was quite smooth.

Really? It could be that I left it in the dev too long...I was kinda doing two things at once at the time. I quite like the grain though so perhaps I'll keep souping while distracted...

As far as the cast goes, yeah, I like film, lenses, and sensors that render coolly and a bit blue...I also really love the Epson R-D1 with Zeiss 28/2.8...great detail and cool colors.

I just want to add, aside from the film, that these pictures are practically an advertisement for using a TLR. You'd have to be lying on your side on the wet pavement in order to compose this on a rangefinder!

It seems pretty restrained colour wise for Fuji which I sometimes find a bit oversaturated in it's look ... easily fixed when you scan admittedly!

This is probably the nicest color film I've used under decidedly mixed-lighting conditions.

thanks for putting up some samples, i have one roll finished but need to get it developed. how do the colours compare in your opinion to 400H? i really like 400H which is supposed to be more neutral.

i also saw some comments about Press 800, that is just Superia 800 in different packaging, with slightly more consistent handling at the factory? 800z is supposed to be a lot better. i really like Press 800 too and it's cheap! ($3 at B&H), it's not as saturated as the faster Superia films

Hi Johnny Moped,

it isn't true.. I just recently bought 2 rolls of 35mm Pro 800Z at a local (now mainly digital) photo store. If I remember correctly, I paid something like EUR 7,50 per roll.

I did "waste" those two rolls in a Lomo Fisheye, but still: abso-freaking-lutely beautiful colors!! I couldn't believe it. Especially compared to the 2years expired Superia 800 I normally use in that Fisheye.. 😀

However, I have to admit that I haven't seen it for sale online anywhere in Germany or Austria.. There's hope, though: maybe these guys will ship it to you: http://www.blende7.at/fujifilms.htm I've been to the shop quite a few times, but never ordered online. Don't even know if its possible..

I used up some rolls of NPz 800 that expired in 2005 or so that was stored in a fridge. I really liked it but I haven't bought any since. I don't really shoot colour very often, but if I needed to I would have a few rolls of this in my bag for sure.

I've been a fan of 800z for a while. I don't really shoot it as much as i'd like though, but I do have a roll in my Canonet at the moment.
