Unfortunately, I grabbed my camera and went to use it this afternoon and the display didn't work. It still takes pictures, but no display at all. I didn't think that this was a common malady so I'm wondering if anyone else has had a problem with this issue.
On another note, I'm in San Diego and was wondering who I might take the camera to that is highly regarded. Otherwise, I guess I might have to ship it somewhere. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Joel

I had a similar problem before. I took my camera to Steve's Camera Service Center in Culver City, CA (Los Angeles area) and he was able to fix the problem. He said that the few he has repaired involved problems with the contacts that activate the screen due to the swivel action, and in my case it was a fuse that was blown. He is also one of the few people who would even look at the R-D1 nowadays, since parts are scarce and it is a finicky camera. But he fixed the LCD, aligned my rangefinder, and ensured the shutter was working properly as part of a complete service. His shop has a website so check it out. Contact him directly to get a price quote. Nice guy and highly recommended. Hope this helps.

Can't really just get the display repaired. I will have to have the camera completely CLA'd, rangefinder adjusted, sensor cleaned, etc... At first, I was disappointed, but I've had the camera a few years now so I think that the full Monty here might be a good idea. Also, I'll then have a 3 to 6 month warranty as well. Always a good thing with an R-d1(s).

I was quoted $295. I have no comparison so I can't decide if that is an average price for that amount of work. Obviously, it's well beyond my abilities and resources so I'll have to pay it. Since it is the first time that I've had even an inkling of a problem, I think that it is money well spent. Also, it is like buying a warranty as well.

He does the whole CLA because fixing the LCD involves disassembling the camera almost completely anyway. It's one of those things when he's already in there, might as well... And he looks at the shutter to make sure it is properly lubricated too, which Steve believes is the cause of the shutter failures that are common in this camera.
