Lightroom processing of R-D1 .ERF files

Hi,

I have a quick question regarding processing of the R-D1 pictures.

Most of the time, I really enjoy the quality if the JPEG pictures straight out of the camera, yet when I drop them in Lightroom it seems to "destroy" all i like about the pictures. For example : It can't seem to get the white balance right even if i tell it to use settings from the camera, the images are much darker and generally less colorful. I can fix it to a degree by fixing the white balance manually but it's very odd how it totally messes up the pictures.
I have tried Epson photo RAW but it's a real pain to use and to be honest a pretty rubbish peice of software. Aperture I need to try but I was wondering if there is a way to get Lightroom to open up the RAW files and render them like the camera would have created the JPEGs ?

Try setting the color balance in Lightroom to be As Shot

I tried this but it doesn't change anything. I think i will post a screen grab when i get home to demonstrate. Easiest fix i have found so far is to use the pipette tool and fix the WB myself for each shot. Can be quite time consuming though.

I am not quite sure I understand your question. Are you using .erf or jpegs?
Although PhotoRaw is somewhat altmodisch, with a little practice changing white balance, filters and vignetting gets second nature and thus very fast. The tiff output I get from PhotoRaw beats anything I can get in LR with the same files. I am not claiming others cannot obtain the same quality or better using LR instead of PhotoRaw - but the latter consistently gets you there, fast.

Similar question, hope the OP doesn't mind, but I find my shots a bit warm straight off the cam... I use aperture, does this account for it? No matter what type of light I shoot in, it comes out warm. I use AWB usually, paired with a nokton 40...

Hi,

In Lightroom I am stacking the ERF+JPEG. Basically the JPG will never be seen, so i can say i'm using the ERF raw file.
I agree with PhotoRaw i get good results, but my problem is with the ergonomics of the package. It's very slow on my intel mac because i'm forced to use the powerpc version of the package.

what you are seeing is the lack of a proper camera calibration profile
I'm not sure if adobe has made calibration profiles for the R-d1 (I don't have an R-d1 yet)

to check go to the bottom right panel in the develop module and see what profiles are in the drop down list
you should see ARC4.4 , ARC 3.3 , Adobe Standard . then any special profiles for your camera

these special profiles try to mimic the look of the cameras presets
( for my Nikon they have std, portrait, vivid and neutral plus a few others )

the profiles take the raw data look and change it to look like the camera processed jpeg would look with the different camera presets

if they don't have R-d1 profiles you can make your own

I have made lightroom presets of each profile with just the camera calibration applied to an image so I can apply it to my files as I import them, that way they look a lot closer to the jpeg that comes out of the camera

if you find that you are always adding a little increase in the blacks or sharpening etc. on nearly all your images, you can include these in your import preset and save yourself a lot of time
with your general editing

I have just had a look at the latest Adobe camera raw (5.4) readme and they support the R-D1, R-d1s and the R-D1x so there should be camera profiles in the list
