"DEMAND FOR LEICA'S M9 CAMERA IS OUTSTRIPPING SUPPLY AS CUSTOMERS - INCLUDING PROFESSIONALS TRADING IN THEIR DSLR's -SNAP UP THE FULL FRAME CAMERA WITHIN MINUTES OF WEDNESDAY'S LAUNCH" AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER UK

YYYYYEEEEESSSSSS!!!! I AM GLOATING!!!!

THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!! THERE WILL BE DEPRESSION AT THE NIKON AND CANON BOOTHS!!!

I WAS RIGHT!!!

Well the initial allocation to the UK is 15. Two of these are coming to Sheffield and neither is being snapped up by a pro DSLR user. This leaves a possible 13 other cameras so this sounds a little premature!

In Yorkshire we have a phrase "Many a slip between cup and mouth" which springs to mind.

i would give it a few weeks. i don't want to start getting down on a camera i (and many others) have never used but so far the reviews have been mixed.

I'd love an M9 and am saving for one, as I was saving for an M8, only problem is Canon keep releasing nice glass, just as I approach tipping point for an Mx :)

I love my Canon 5D as much as I love my M6/M3 as much as I love my Hasselblad 503 and wont be parting with any of them, even if I do get to afford an M9!!

I seriously doubt that Professionals will give up thier DSLR's.-Dick

I seriously doubt that any professional - unless economically forced into a sellout (and then he won't be getting into Leica) - would sell any of his current camera generation. Quite often they even hold on to one or two before that. You always hope that you are asked for follow-ups to a previous production (as that shows that you have developed a customer base - good for safety and credit), and you do not want to switch lens systems or a sensor half way into a production, or you'll fry in colour-matching hell...

Wow....15 cameras ! That would pay the light bill at Leica for about what?? a Day ! IF any real can be derived from the M9 is that if it does have marketability then Nikon & Zeiss will deliver a better cheaper product in a heart beat. And for Less money and the Zeiss will take all Leica lenses. old and new!

The Nikon would most likey take any existinsting "F" lenses and also the autofocus models up to 135mm. So I doubt that 15 cameras is somehow about to be the indicator of the swing of world consumer demand.
So while the 2 were sold...the more improtant is issue is that the M9 will not make dent in the sales of Nikon or Canon or for that matter Zeiss.

How does that old nusery rhym go...If wishes were horses beggars might fly!
So modern reality is that now if hollywood stars start buying these that must mean there great....right?

Well the M9 is for the moment over rated and over hyped and over priced!

All the best...Laurance

But I am sure, as I was saying in the past, M9 will definitely attract attention of DSLR users and bring more rangefinder users...whether pro or not...

Well said

I want one and will but will wait

Maybe, but right now it is also one of a kind. I am glad for Leica and hope this goes incredibly well. It bodes well for all RF afficionados, whether digital or film.

At $7k, the market for the M9 is already small. The vast majority of people interested in the Canon and Nikon booths are spending considerably less than that on entire camera systems. You could draw away the few people interested in the M9 and they'd not notice.

When it was film's day, Leica had a much smaller market share compared to Canon and Nikon SLRs and some of them were larger than the current crop of DSLRs. Why do you think they'll suddenly be interested now. SLRs are very versatile tools. The market for $7k specialized tools is going to be smaller.

Cheers,

What pro, especially one working as a photojournalist or a sports photographer, is going to dump their Canon or Nikon stuff and get a Leica M9? Ludicrous.

That is why I'm waiting till I can get an beat up m9 for 35-50% of what it costs now, then get a 35 1.2 and 50 1.1 from CV .. :)

It doesn't matter that there is just 15 cameras sold in UK, what matters is that it appears to be a huge hit!

Unless one is really into a field of expertise, most people are like sheep. The M8 got a fair share of coverage compared to the size of its real market share, and the M9 will probably get even more press. Especially as it is actually comparable to the top Nikon and Canon products.

The best we all here can do if we want a decently priced M9 is actually to get into the hype with both feet! Then prices in a year or so will drop, Leica will survive - and most of us can then look forward to buying second hand M9s in the future. Which will be a safe buy, since they are reliable in the first part - and because Leica is around to service them...

I doubt that we'll ever get back to the point where a photojournalist's kit had an SLR or two with a 180/2.8, maybe a fast lens in the 85 to 105 range, but for the most part the lenses from about 90mm down were on rangefinder bodies. On the other hand I hear plenty of complaints from the PJ's I run into about the size and weight of a DSLR with a huge zoom. I was at a political event a few months ago chatting with a young Miami Herald photographer. She asked if she could hold and look through the finder of one of my Leica M bodies, something she'd never done before. She said that she wished the paper would let them shoot film and hoped that a full frame digital rangerfinder would hit the market. If Bessa could do that at the price of a DSLR there'd be a LOT of potential customers.

Perhaps it's just a question 'numbers'.
If Leica sold three M9's (out of 15 allocated to the UK) within a day or two, can Nikon or Canon say they've sold 20% of their top digital (UK stock) bodies within 48 hrs of release?

;)

Steve.

Ouchh

Ouchh

Oh, the tyranny of "numbers"! In a similar vein, it can be said
that even 100% of 15, is still....well....15 :bang: ;)

While the price of the M9 does`nt make economic sense for me, I
really, really, really hope Leica sells a lot of them. If someone loves
RF`s then this can only be good for the community.

Thanks,
Al
