If there is going to be any M9 sales then some M8s have to change owners. How many of you are going to buy a M8 and how much are you willing to pay?

About $1.5k - about the most I'd be willing to pay for a film M, and the M8 won't last nearly as long. Not bothered if it is third or fourth hand.

The few I have talked to here in Norway say that if they can't get 14.000 NOK (2,350 $) they won't sell. Then they can just as well keep them as backups. What seems to be a problem is that the volume of potential customers is very low. Most members of the small community of M-users here in Norway already have a M8.... There isn't this number og 'hang-arounds' as before. They already got a 5D...

i was hoping for a price of NOK 18.000, but the market seems very quiet with little or no buyer interest for the cameras already on offer here in Norway (three cameras; ranging from 26.000 NOK for a M8.2 to a silver (!) M8 for 14.000 NOK).

The 2.hand price will not decide 'if' I will buy a M9, but certainly 'when'.

The M8 is a great camera and well worth at $2k-$2.5k used. I imagine that there will be a sell-off in the beginning and some deals will be had, but that used prices will level off at the above stated level. It will be interesting to see if Leica drops the price on the M8 or retires it altogether.

If I get an M9, I probably will not sell my M8. I could see shooting 28 or 35 on the M9 and having a 50 or 75 on the M8 and switching between the two.
 
In the UK my local Leica dealer is offering £1500 for an M8 as a trade-in against an M9. I think an M8.2 was something like £2500.

I imagine the trade-in prices will dictate secondhand prices.
i.e. If Leica is offering £1500 for a trade-in then you would expect more for a private sale or it's not worth the trouble.

Me - I'm keeping my M8. but if anyone needs to sell a 35mm Summilux at a bargain price to fund an M9 purchase... 😉
 
I'm starting to see nice M8's at $1,995. I suspect they will be available generally from $1,500 to $1,800 soon, and probably hang at that price for a while. I see folks still trying to get $1,600 for RD-1's, but I think that price is unsustainable on the RD-1, except perhaps to cult buyers.
 
Personally I wouldn't buy one now that a full frame version is out, pricewise £1500 for an M8 with no issues and £2500 for an M8.2 seems reasonable if that's all Leica will trade them at. Second hand digital really is a buyers market and I've only ever bought digital cameras in the full knowledge that it's value will drop through the floor as soon as something else comes out. I've always bought at a price that i'm happy to write off without thought to resale value.
If we've waited this long for the M9 then i'm sure we can wait a little longer for prices to stabilise. If Leica can do a full frame then my feeling is that someone else will. It's only a matter of time.
 
Well, here people want to buy! Not bad. Not so in Noway. There, the individuals using M-lenses are a flock of gnomes & dwarfs that already have a M8.

While the majority of the photographers, the SLR-folks, tall and sunburned, sit in the bushes and photographs small girls on the beach. Don't come here and 'I-am-a-lumberjack-and-I'm-OK' me!
 
Since I once paid almost 1000 EUR for the Canon 300D and then, after a while, paid 1200 for a 1Ds and sold the 300D for 250 I think I learned my lesson. Clearly, now I can not sell the 1Ds for 1000, but then I will probably loose only some hundreds but have had a great camera for the time. I think a decent price for me as a buyer would be sub-2000, but I am still reluctant to get a 3 years old camera for double that I paid for the 1Ds.
 
I think there are more peeps lined up to buy a cheap M8 than there are lined up to buy an M9. With many who will buy the M9 keeping the M8 as a BU. If prices dip below $2k it won't be for long IMHO. It will take another option to the M8 on the marketplace to force prices lower. For example.... If this Samsung N? has a DX sensor and a short enough register for M lenses.

Good point. Buyers of M8s should be aware of what filters and how many filters the sellers are offering with their M8s. These filters are a major cost factor.

To me it is all about the warranty. I wouldn't touch an M8 with a ten feet pole, if it's out of warranty. But I'd pay up for one that had at least six months of *transferrable* warranty left. Where it was bought matters also: In certain countries (at least here in Europe), there may be a longer protection against camera that stops working (manufacturing faults). This is what I'd be looking for. Cameras bought from the US or Asia, with little or no warranty left are simply not interesting.
 
I would never consider an M8 for two reasons. First it is not FF and you do not get the full benefit of your lenses, ie you are not using the full field of view. Secondly I can see Leica discontinuing the M8/8.2 and that is not an attractive proposition to me. Leica has no long history of producing lenses specifically for a sub FF sensor as other major manufacturers have so there is no imperative to support sub FF sensor cameras for Leica. I am just guessing but I think used M8/8.2 prices should plummet. That is not to indicate that the M8/8.2 is not still highly usable, which it still is.
