While I've been considering getting a Jupiter 12 for my IIIf as it's wider option, I thought I'd ask here in case anyone knows of any other options that might be available? My budget is pretty minimal - probably be saving up for a bit, depending but even so I'm hoping to find something in the $75 to $150 range.

Is there anything out there like that? I recall some cheap but nice Steinheil long lenses - did they make any LTM wides? If so, are they cheap?

That kind of information is what I'm curious about. I'm not especially concerned about cosmetics, just a nice cheap lens that will do it's part of the job.

Thanks!

William

I picked-up a Canon LTM f:1.8 / 35 mm on eBay about three years ago for $90. You might find a later Canon 35 in f 2 or 2.8.

Look for Komura lenses in LTM; I have a 2.8 / 35 black Komura that came with my "ugly" IIIa (which is now my user LTM body).

KEH has consistent prices and grades their merchandise very conservatively.

I got a Leitz Elmar 3,8 /35 uncoated on eBay the other year for about $150; if it's Leitz, it's going to be expensive and slow, so I haven't bothered chasing a Summaron or coated Elmar 35. Would rather save my pennies for a Cosina-Voigtlander 21mm.

My observation is that wide-angle lenses tend to run more expensive than to long-focus lenses for a given RF camera, based on my shopping for the LTM, Contax, and Nikon S.

Good hunting !

I'd say that a J-12 is your best bet. Steinheil did make wide lenses, but it might be close to impossible to find one now. I can vouch for the quality of the J-12.

Canon f2.8 35mm might be had for about $100.00. Surpasses the Summaron in sharpness by a smidgion.

Komura would be great but hard to fine. Take a look around some of the pawn and antique shops up that way for old anything LTM. You might find an old Leica 35/3.5 in that range. Any CV you can find would be great, best to hunt EvilBay or here. I find most of the prices here are lower than on EvilBay. A Nikkor 35/2.5 would be great if you can find one. The only Canon lens I ever had was a 135 so I have no experience to draw from on the wides.

Timing is really the biggest thing in finding a great bargain. Do some searches, watch for miss spellings, there really are bad 35mm lenses that have survived. Steinhill made some fun stuff but as mentioned finding them is a bit hard. I watched for an 85/2.8 for years and never got one in LTM.

There are a ton of 50mm lenses in every price range, step down though to 35mm and you step up in price range for most lenses. The Canon 35/2.8 and J12 are both good lenses though and relatively easy to find. I think that is one of the factors contributing to the price of a lot of the LTM 35mm lenses, they are not very plentiful. With some careful shopping you should be able to find the Canon in your price range, if you are luck for less. And of course the J12 can be readily found on ebay.

Thanks for the info folks. Now I just need to wait for someone to sell a J12 here since I canceled my ebay account when they started requiring the use of paypal.
