Hello everyone, I'm considering getting a used D700 when and if they come on the market. Would there be a downside if the camera has been used by a pro on the job with many, many actuations? Just asking because of the finite life of some of these digital SLR's.

Hope this doesn't sound rude, but isn't this like asking what are the problems in buying a second hand car?
I'd feel a LOT more comfortable about buying a used D700 than a used M8. Just cover yourself by buying something with a warranty or return policy.

It's kind of tricky I think. And it depends a lot on how it was used by the original owner, but the Nikon D700 is built to be very tough I'm sure...

Like with all things used, make sure you buy it somewhere reputable. Many camera shops will take trades, or just sell cameras that have been refurbished, or used (but used after they had checked to make sure it is in proper selling condition).
I think this would be much better than buying it on eBay, or craigslist, where once you have the camera and run into problems after a few weeks, you'll be screwed.

to be honest, just buy a new one as the s/h ones i've seen are only a little cheaper. Looks like one of those cameras that people hang on to as there aren't many available s/h.

Let's be realistic..
The D700 has been out like a year or so. It's rated at over 150.000 shutter clicks. That means to wear it out, it's had to have taken over 400 pictures each and every day including weekends.. Now, how likely is that?

My thanks to all for your input. Peter - after I posted I did the math similar to what you stated and realized the same. How likely, not too. That's what is nice about hearing different points of view. Thanks again.

you will appreciate a lot the D700 and its RF-like view mode (keeping on the DX framelines) a bit less probably the weight but not much else.. high ISO is really an excellent performer, even if I suggest you to shoot 3200 -1 EV and then rework in PP ) - I'm not a PP wizard but just look at this one: 50 (75mm) F/4.8 - 1/180s - 3200 iso -1 EV

I would look around for a mint one on fredmiranda or some other forum. There are people who buy them and then they want to upgrade to the D700x (I know not out there yet but these people selling them think its coming out).

The shutter computation was already done by others, if that can help I have seen older Nikon models rated at 150000 cycles go up to more than 200000 with no problems, also I would rather get a camera which is used daily than one that has been in a drawer without working for a long time...

It´s quite common, however, to see ads from amateur photographers stating that a pro camera has not been used professionally, as if that unequivocally is a good thing, I´m not so sure.

From the reviews I read the D700 is a true Nikon. I'd go the referb idea and if you can from a place like Adorama and purchase a Nikon extened warrentee (they said I could for a referb D60 so why not a D700).

Buy one from a store selling it as an open-box or demo, or just wait for the D700X to come and rake in the deals from all the gear junkies who must have the latest and best (and baby their stuff).
Recently, I saw one on Photo.net, I believe, going for $1800 with some 4000 actuations. Considering the life-span of these cameras, that's still pretty good! Mine is just around that number... I believe.
