Street is a tough genre to crack, alot of folks can shoot pics of people crossing the street, people in the street or sidewalk but to create a good street shot there needs to be some serendipity invloved. As said above it needs to pull you in, capture or hold your attention.

Totally. And I think street shooting in developed countries is challenging, especially compared to 60 or 70 years ago, because people and communities don't 'live' on the street like they used to. Streets in New York used to be extended living rooms. Shooting someone walking with their head down tends to be less compelling than a group of people relating to each other, engaged with each other. You can of course find good shots anywhere, and you can seek out compelling locations like Le Vrai Rdu does, or find the humor in absurd moments like Tuna does, but urban sidewalks can be slim pickins...

I think Todd hits it on the head with serendipity but I think there are ways to make yourself more or less open to these moments and capture them when they do occur. To me this is the skill of street photography.

Nice shot, and true enough. I just don't devote enough time to street shooting and it's so much about that investment of time in order to find the moments.

i've gone out with the purpose of shooting 'street' styled photographs only a handful of times, 99.5% of the images are terrible. the ones that are passable are not that great, it is for me incredibly hard. i'm looking forward to the arrival of my M4-P so I can invest some more time to trying my hand at street shooting.

I gave up on serious street after so many people wanted to take my head off for taking their picture. To many confrontations I didn't want to deal with. Maybe another place or time and I would give it a try again. I found it extremely difficult to get good results.
