You're almost right. The technique is called double printing. It's what happens when you expose the same sheet of paper to two negatives in succession (not at once, in which case it would be called negative stacking and it would give you a different effect). In double printing, one of the photos has to have a black background; in both of the above cases it was the torso.
 
Is there the tiniest hint of colour in this ^^ picture Jeff? I'm not sure if I can detect the subtlest hint in the water and sky or if my eyes are playing tricks on me....'tis early here mind🙂

Judging by the slight hint of red, I'm guessing that it was scanned from a selenium-toned print. It would have been a great candidate for split-toning, maybe with gold toner.
