So I just had my first battle getting film onto a plastic reel. This will be my 3rd time developing and the first two times I had no problem getting the film onto the reel, but this time, WOAH, what a hassle.

I nearly panicked. I couldn't tell if there was something wrong with one of the sprocket holes on the film, if something was wrong with the reel itself, or if I was just being clumsy and stupid (likely). It would load to a point, seem to get stuck and then it would UNLOAD (go backwards).

WTF?

Thinking it might been the reel, I went into my husband's studio, which is nearly pitch black dark, and using only the arm hole swapped the reel for another.

In the process, I realized I still had my glow-in-the-dark watch on. LOL

So, I may have ruined the film anyway, but I did manage to finally get it on. Don't know why... I struggled for nearly 40 minutes and have no idea what the problem was.

Wish me luck... going to go develop it now.

It is my quest to hip everyone to the much easier to load Samigon reel.

This is for people who have trouble loading the reel. These things are almost FOOLPROOF.

Well, it looks like all but one photo was okay - now whether they're good or not is another story! LOL - Hopefully I'll be able to scan some later tonight.

Thardy... I looked at the link and I see that it looks like the paterson reels (and compares to them). I'm not sure how they load, but my problem wasn't getting it started, it was getting it completely on the reel... I'd get like maybe 6-8 frames in and it would jam and then start REWINDING.

I've had that (rewinding) happen before, and it is a major cause of frustration. I make sure the reel is completely dry by heating it in the oven at 105- 110 degrees f for several minutes.

I think it sometimes has to do with the roll of film though.

Does the paterson reel have those large flanges which allow easy loading?

Look at the reel on the right.

My daughter told me about these after using them in High School photography class.
