My first book, please check, Cuba in Grays

Congratulations on your book. I especially enjoyed the photos taken around the capital building. Very nice eye.

You certainly came away with a very nice book considering the amount of time you have during vacation.

Thanks for the inspiration as well. Hopefully I'll get my photos of Cuba into book form as well...

Harry.

very nice stuff there Aykut. I liked the sequence of some of the pics, esp the car and the later shot of the open bonnet. Though, I do believe that the color photographs break the flow.

Yes my first idea was to make a full BW book but then I could not resist to show the color shots that mainly reflects their colorful cheerful personalities. I was actually not happy with the color renderation of the color films I used. Either they were out of date or processed badly or XRAY'd...

Thank you very much for your reviews!

It's very hard to resist that temptation!!! Congratulations for the excellent set of pictures, and thank you for bringing to my mind very pleasant memories.
Best regards

It is my pleasure that if it served you to bring your memories back! Thank you very much!

Very enjoyable and I agree with Pickett ... I've always found the faded colours of Cuba fascinating and it could have all been in colour for me.

'Buena Vista Social Club' has to be one of my favourite all time movies. Ry Cooder's musical inspiration combined with that amazing Cuban music culture was movingly memorable!

Hi Keith,

Thank you for your comment. I watched the movie before I went to Cuba. Unfortunatelly I did not have chance to photograph that musical side of Cuban people (we were not able to go to a musical or concert during our stay), which is a big miss I know. It can be another project for me :)

Good stuff, just wish it was possible to visit from the
US w/out all the bull&#*@ that goes along w/all the restrictions.
Thanks for sharing.

Offering to take you to the site of the Buena Vista Social Club is one of the most common intros by the Cuban locals in Havana. I had a rum there late one morning just to meet the patrons.

I am happy with my decision to interpret the Cuban people in black and white, but that is just my style.

You can see my recent Cuba photos and read my thoughts about the people and the country at my website www.BobMichaels.org

Sorry for the OT, Aykut.

Bob, that write-up and the accompanying photos are beautiful. Were those shot in Tri-X ? And that photo of Che-Guevara and others is simply wonderful.

The Motorcycle Diaries is one of my favorite books.

I found the Cuban people to be very compatible to my style, which is believing:

1) It is no problem that we have never met before.
2) It is not a barrier to communication that we speak very little of each others language.
3) You care about me as a person just as I do you.

So I was able to make friends very quickly and photograph as a result. I have to give the credit to the Cuban people, not my skills as a photographer.

I was amazed the number of Cubans who stopped so I could shoot multiple frames. Same for the number of those who invited me into their homes.

Naruto: I shot Neopan 400, not Tri-X. But I cannot tell any real difference.

Thanks for the positive comments about my photos. There is a gallery that has shown my work before and is interested in an exhibit of this. But there probably will not be a Blurb book, just not my style.
