I've been offered a really nice example of a 1966 chrome Tele-Elmarit (fat). I've only seen photos so far and from those the glass seems in good condition and the barrel appears beautiful. I'm going to take a look at the lens Tuesday. I'm bringing my flashlight. What else should I look at and what would be a good price for such a lens in Very Good condition (I understand chrome ones fetch a premium)? Also, what is the original, contemporary hood that was supposed to be used with it?

Thanks for your input.

Bump.
By now, I've found out that the element in the back is sensitive to etching damage on the inside caused by fumes from oil (?), which is not repairable.
Anyone?

I've once had a black one of those first, 5 element Tele Elmarits (11800). The chrome one is rare and usually expensive on the used market.

Only the thin TE suffered rear element etching. The fat one did not. The hood to use is the 12575.

Cheers,

Roland.

It's the "thin" T-E that has the etching - about 5% of them. I've used a thin for many years and both fat & thin are good performers but susceptible to flare.

Thanks Roland and Peter. Good to know that the one I'm going to see is not sensitive to the etching effect. At least I think it is the fat one that I'm going to check.

I have a black one. I've been using it more than my chrome 90 Elmarit, and more than my Summicron AA. I seem to like the compactness for travel. No problems.

If it's chrome, it most certainly is. The 4 element, thin TE only came in black.

Cheers,

Roland.

Great. If the lens is good and the price I'll buy it and will show how it looks here shortly...
