YEAH love the compactness of this combo. I also have a Nikkor 50 f1.4 getting some CLA now. Would love to try it out with this body.

Light and compact.

You're getting the classic look from this lens! I sold mine earlier this year only because I didn't like the infinity lock and got a DR Summicron as a replacement. Same result... 🙂

If you don't find a real period front lens cap, the current lens cap for the discontinued Elmar-M 50/2.8 fits perfectly, I've used it on my own rigid and now the DR and it fits both. It's identical in size, design and logo script to the original cap and only differs from it in that it has a matte look that actually looks better with the lens. The Leica part nr. for this cap is 14321.

BTW I did some searching about hoods. Seems like the newer 50/2.8 Elmar hood works on the rigid, but only without a filter. Using filters with the Elmar hood will cause vinetting.

I really like the look of the rigid with the Elmar hood, and the bonus is being able to use the period correct lens cap.

Peter didn't mention the hood of the new Elmar, only the cap, which looks the same as for the Rigid Summicron. I have a few of these original caps. There is also one that is thin and much lighter. I doubt if it's the original, but again it looks the same. PM me if you are interested. I will have to look, but I may have a spare cap that is original for your lens.

I'm fairly sure I tried the Elmar-M hood on my rigid with a filter and it didn't vignette. I haven't tried it on the DR. The silver one does look like it belongs on the lens though...

It does vignette but only closed down, Peter.

You are correct that the chrome 50/2.8 Elmar hood looks like it belongs on the lens. The vignetting I was speaking of was mentioned on the Leica Users' Group (LUG). The posting specifically mentioned that there have been reports that the Elmar hood will vignette IF USED WITH FILTERS. I do not know personally if this is true, but I am going filterless with my rigid.

What I love about using the Elmar hood on my rigid is that it does not block or obscure my viewfinder, unlike other hoods that need vents.

I hope this clarifys that the Elmar hood is highly recommended and looks totally retro.

I must be missing something ... the M-Elmar hood clearly vignettes with filter on my DR and any other Summicron I tried (on film).

Of course, on an M8, RD1, or at f2 on film you will never notice.
 
Update. Found the original cap cheaply in Singapore. It's a bit loose when cap over a E39 filter but other than that I am set!!! haha!!!

Planning to try out the Nikkor 50f1.4 and Nikkor 85f2.0 on the M3 this weekend.
 
Love number 3 of the first series of Zoom P and 1 and 3 of the second series. You've got an eye all right. Erik's geometric shot fantastic.
