I think that these two cameras address completely different users and interests, and are not competitors. If you want great image quality and have little interest in a big zoom range, and don't mind spending more money on the camera and lenses, the M4/3 fits the bill nicely. If you prefer a big zoom in a smaller package, and are willing to accept somewhat reduced image quality, the G11 looks like a pretty good camera.
 
I haven't handled a G11, but did own a G9 for a summer. I enjoyed it's images and video. In fact, I really enjoyed the timelapse videos. Pretty cool to watch clouds pass over a scenery.

So far, I'm very pleased with my GF1 kit--20/1.7, 7-14, 14-45, and 14-140. But still I'm curious to try the G11. Without digging through the review or looking for specs, does it do timelapse video like the G9?
 
molsondog, nice job buying the M7, hide the credit card bill from your significant other. The arguments about which new digital gadget is the best quickly will become uninteresting to you.

Personally I prefer scanning film to wet printing. So the M7 it will function fine as a full frame digital if you so choose. If you compare it to the M9, you got a real bargain.

As for the review, it seemed a little lackluster although those digital review sites seem to always recommend everything so you have to read between the lines a bit to get their real impression. Personally I'd get a S90 before a G11. Smaller, same sensor, faster lens I believe. I think the G series are for people who like to play with their settings a lot and who find a lousy built in finder better than none at all.

I'm sure Canon will come out with a true micro 4/3 competitor soon or shoehorn a bigger sensor in the G series to compete. It jumps into the size range to be in competition with the micro 4/3s and doesn't really stack up image quality wise.
 
I own a G10 and I'm very happy with it. The perfect digital travel companion for my old Zeiss Super Ikonta RF Folder. The lens is great and does the 15 MP sensor justice if the light is good enough. The poor points are as everyone knows low-light performance and dynamic range.

Having read several reviews I see no reason to go for a G11 - the low light performance is still nothing to write home about. If I "had" to upgrade, I would go for the S90 for the smaller size, interesting user interface and faster lens. But whats really missing in the G11 is a larger sensor. As someone wrote above, four thirds makes the G-series future dubious.
 
I have an S90 and it's very superior to the other pocketable cameras in the family (Canons, Olympus and Pentax). It's good for its size at high ISO settings. The lack of a viewfinder is my only problem. All photo equipment is about compromises.....

Had the G11 had a better viewfinder, I would have been tempted. The swiveling screen can compensate in some situations.

But pocketability won out in the end.
 
I've had my G11 for a few months now and I use it constantly. Its a fantastic tool and has limitless possibilities in RAW mode.

The noise at 3200 iso is better than anything grain-wise I ever got with Tri-X and Rodinal, so I don't know what all the objection is. Personally I dig digital noise. There's nothing more dreadful than perfect, billion megapixel-perfect res digital pics. Perfect for magazine and billboard ads, but for a meaningful image I find them too antiseptic.

The G11 is a very fast working camera once you program in all your presets. This camera is meant for shooters that only care about getting the shot. If you're a hobbyist-camera club type I'm sure there are other gadget-bling filled cameras that will make you happy.

Something to think about for 2010...What's The Best camera ? the one that you have on you at all times. What's the best Scotch ? the one you don't have to pay for ! because free tastes pretty damn good.
What's the best car to drive these days ? the free rental you just got comp'd because you'll most likely do things with that car that you'd never do with your own ! Same thing w/ cameras.


PS- Best advice I ever heard...Why don't you just shut your pie hole and take some pictures already !!!!!!!
