Why I like the R-D1 and cv 40/1.4 combo

Thanks for the kind words. I've been having fun with my E-P1 recently and took some pics with it as well but nothing matches this combo at 800 iso for interior portraits - and it is still my favourite camera 🙂

Actually it is my brother's first born and only a week or so old. Mine are all grown up now (16-23) but I just love babies and it brings back so many memories of my own.

Yes. You must be careful though in low light as the DOF leaves little room for error and at F1.4 it must be focused on the eyes of the subject at all times.

i am liking this combo as well. it's an odd focal length at the equivalent of 60mm but it seems so much better than 50mm.

These are really good examples of what can be done with this combination. I especially like the second one.

I sometimes use it in combination with my sexier 50mm Sonnars (Canon, modern Zeiss), and come home with the best shots having been taken with this 40mm.

I have less problems focusing with the Nokton than with the other two. I do have framing problems at closer distances, which seems contrary to many of the opinions expressed on RFF; cut off guitars in my concert shots had been a frequent occurrence. But I have been handling that better lately.

I'm glad you posted both monochrome and colour examples, because I too find it works well with both.

I know what you mean. Up close I usually cheat a little to the left when shooting portrait mode or up a little in landscape.

This combination has become my most frequent companion, too. I really like it inside at f2 and above. The feeling of the shot seems very difft, somehow "smoother" from ones taken at f1.4.

My most recent blog post was taken with this combo. 99% of last photo set (~300 photos) was used with this combo and were fine (but usually f1.7 - f4) but this keeper was at 1.4 and got the double line bokeh blues, not too bad though.

I finally got to shoot with this combo tonight for the 1st time.
I have to admit the 60mm focal length feels a bit nicer than 50.
Here are two from this evening, both shot wide open at 1600.
