Lately I've mostly been shooting Neopan 400 and souping it in Rodinal. I like the tonality I get with it especially when I'm using vintage lenses.

Neopan 400 sings in Xtol IMO, particularly when diluted to 1+2 or so. I have also developed it in mixed Xtol/Rodinal for a bit more crunch in 120 format and like the look for some things.

DDX is also good... as is D76 according to others. Seems is develops nicely in just about everything but I dont push mine. For another stop I use the 1600 (at 500 (high contrast)-800 (flat light).

Tri-X is my de-facto film. I use HP5+ if the store runs out of Tri-x.
I should try Neopan because of all the votes. Peer pressure you know 🙂

I was a huge Tri-X & HP-5 user, until I discovered Neopan 400. It's a much better film. Very fine grained and wonderful tonal range.

I haven't tried all of the films on that list, but of the 6 I have used, HP5 has been my favourite 400 bw. That said, I prefer Neopan 1600, I love that film.

Finally getting the hang of HP5+. Started w/ D-76 1:1, switched to HC110 dil. e or h and haven't looked back.

When I was still shooting and souping film, that was my M.O., too. I came to HP5 after years of frustration with Tri-X and D7-6. Towards the end, I tried Tri-X in Rodinal and got some rolls that I liked. Oh, and I shot a bunch of XP-1 for a while.

Anyways, voted HP5+.

I like HP5+ in 120 and Tmax400 in 135. Tmax is good in 120 as well, but I've got a thing for HP5+ in that format.

(I don't get the results I want with Delta 400, however Delta 100 is one of my favorite 100-speed films...)

I'm surprised at the lack of love for Fomapan / Arista.EDU Ultra (same film). I use a wide variety of films, don't really have a favorite, but I find a lot of my favorite pieces have been shot on Fomapan.

Ilford HP5 because of its forgiving nature, lovely contrast and every time I go back to it, it makes me smile.

HP5+ for 400 speed, shot at an EI of 250, but I most often use FP4+ at a true speed of 125. Both developed in Sprint. I occasionally shoot Tri-X.

I've shot nothing but HP5+ for the past year and processed in D76 (1:1 or 1:3) but recently started trying out the new Tmax. So far I'm really liking the Tmax and I may stick with it for quite a while.

Ever since I discovered Neopan 400, I've completetely abandoned Tri-X and HP-5. The Neopan 400 has fantastic tonality and much finer grain.

I'll second that on Neopan. Just a fantastic range of tones. A beautiful dreamy black. I have used everything in shooting for the last 50 years and this one is it for me.
